So amazon got the best of me this week and I grabbed a lightening deal for the Tag pen figuring if I didn't gift it to my 4.5 ds, it would be a good gift for our 4yo nephew. We had Tag jr, and it was not wildly popular here, mostly used for plane flights and restaurants. However, DS is now into letters, sounds, rhyming words etc and may enjoy the tag pen. I was also thinking it might make a nice gift from his new baby brother when he arrives in a few weeks. We have a mobigo 1 but no other leapster/leappad products, as the mobigo doesn't get much use either. He looooooves the iPad though. I hate to start investing in the tag books if they aren't going to get any use. So is this product good? Which books should I start with? I showed him a commercial for this and he said he was interested in it (whereas he actually said he was not interested in the leappad). Oh he also has a vtech v reader that goes through phases of use. Ds is learning letters and sounds but not reading yet. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I ordered it too. We haven't used it yet, it's for Christmas. I have a 4 yo (not reading, about 50% w/ letter ID) and a 6 yo (beginning reader). I bought it primarily to use with the maps and the solar system kit - both are map / space nuts.

I don't know which one we're gifting it to - maybe both? Likely whoever has the fewest gifts, in the end they share everything anyway.

I'd probably give it to your DS. Given that I'm considering it for my 6 yo DS (academically strong), I don't think you're at risk of outgrowing it all that soon.

I really love the tag maps. I think even if your child doesn't love using it for the books the interactivity of the maps makes it worth it.

My dc loved their Reader Pens. One of their fav books was the I Spy book.

Both DDs love it so much we are giving DD2 her own pen for her birthday. I Spy is good and my girls love Giraffes Can't Dance. Most of our other titles are princess books. DD2 will be getting cat in the hat, green eggs and ham, cars and toy story.

I agree with the maps. Also look and see if there are any books for his favorite characters, I know DD LOVES her Dora book. I was planning to get get DD a get ready for kindergarten book, just waiting to a deal.

thanks for the suggestions!!! i went ahead and set it up to make sure it works and now just need to order some books. unfortunately ds saw me setting it up, knew what it was an d asked if i had any books for it yet, so i guess he is eager to use it!!!! going to put it in his gift bag from the new baby along with a couple of books (he loves i spy, and the body and space things sound cool), a personalized super hero cape, and a couple other small toys/games to play with while at the hospital with us. hopefully this will last us a few years!
