DD is newly 2 years old and received a "real" play tea set (meaning ceramic) that was a hand me down from my niece. It's a really nice set. She started to play with it, but she still doesn't understand that certain materials are breakable. Even though her bedroom is carpeted, she can occasionally throw things around and both DH and I are concerned they will get broken or chipped badly. It isn't valuable, but ideally I want it to last a little while at least so she can enjoy it.

For now, I have put it away until she is a little older, but was still thinking a tea set would be fun for her. She loves her cups in her play kitchen and has tons of stuffed animals who would be perfect tea party guests. :wink2:

What is your opinion? Should we just give her the real set or get her a plastic/non-breakable one? TIA

Get the plastic non breakable one. SIL gave DD a FP set that she has loved. Also the Green Toys tea set gets a lot of love here.

Yes, the Green Toys one is great, DD got it at 2 and still uses it all the time.

we have two different FP tea sets (one that looks like it has liquid in it and one that makes sounds) and the Green Toys tea set.......they all get used equally by DD1 (4.5) and DD2 (2)! DD1 also has a ceramic tea set she got for her 4th birthday and the tea pot is broken (by accident) just with regular play.

We have a ceramic tea set because I wanted a non-pink one for my DS. It's this one (http://www.schylling.com/p/childrens-tea-set?pp=12&pp=12) and I love it. One piece was broken recently, but not by DS, and that was after almost two years of play.

If it's not valuable I'd let her play with the ceramic one. How will kids learn to handle breakable things if they aren't given the opportunity? But if it will stress you out then go with Green Toys.

Yet another vote for Green Toys. It is completely food safe, so we have actual tea parties with it (but with hot chocolate). We even eat lunch sometimes using the little plates and bowls from another Green Toys set. The kids beg to do this regularly. They are 5 and 7.
