I have never seen it. We usually buy him and his wife dvds of shows. This is what they have liked:

Justified
Downton Abbey
Sherlock (bbc)
Zen (bbc)
Game of Thrones
They were kind of meh on Breaking Bad
Luther (bbc)
Foyle's War (bbc)

They watch Law and Order (I don't know enough about the various versions, I think they watch all of them).

So - would they like Homeland? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Yes, I think Homeland would be a great choice! It has some nudity and profanity, but it sounds like he is OK with that based on the other DVDs.

I think so. Did he ever watch 24? It's kind of like that.

I don't know if they watched 24... Is it better than 24? I watched a little of season 1 and didn't love it... (sorry).

I think 24 got better; I never saw season 1. But, yes, it's better. Consider all the awards it has swept too.

I think 24 was way better than homeland.

If you are considering homeland he might also like alias.

I've seen a couple seasons of Alias - way too cheesy and silly for them.

I guess I thought Homeland was more serious, based on the awards and buzz. If it is more like Alias/24 level of melodrama then probably not what I was looking for. Thanks!

Another suggestion might be "Call the Midwife"

Old but good, Inspector Morse: http://www.amazon.com/Inspector-Morse-Set-One-Jericho/dp/B0028LOT7O/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1354988212&sr=1-1&keywords=inspector+morse
or the new follow up, Inspector Lewis: http://www.amazon.com/Inspector-Lewis-Pilot-1/dp/B0019QOKRI/ref=sr_1_4?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1354988288&sr=1-4&keywords=inspector+lewis+season+1

DH and I have a similar list and we like Homeland. I am thinking about buying it for my Dad as well. He has very similar taste in shows but doesn't get Showtime.

I personally love Homeland. I loved 24 as well but Homeland is terrific. If you are going to give them DVD's I would go with this one for sure. My parents actually got me into this one!

Upstairs downstairs
Poirot
Wallander (I'm not a fan, but it fits in with the ones you mentioned... it's in the PBS masterpiece mystery lineup)

I thik you are misunderstanding the reviews. When I say 24, I am saying it wrt the plot lines, pace, twists, action... I wouldn't use the words cheesy or melodramatic. I think Homeland would be great for them.

DH and I love Homeland. It is one of our favorite shows. For reference we also watch Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy and Law and Order. I did not watch 24.

This. I completely agree with SB that Homeland is a great choice. It's amazing movie style tv. 24 would be another great choice, although less current.

I probably am misunderstanding. I think the comparison to Alias threw me off because to me that one is cheesy (sorry!).

And when I think 24 I think of elisha Cuthbert being attacked by a mountain lion (maybe season 2) and me turning it off in disgust and never going back...
But Homeland sounds like it is worth a try!

Eta: or what about Boardwalk Empire mentioned by pp?

The Last Place on Earth: The Complete Epic Miniseries - another PBS masterpiece series

Homeland is good. It has action and drama and suspense with one continuous storyline. We're only on about episode 5 now, but it isn't melodramatic IMO.

eta: I think the first season of Prison Break was really good.

Inspector Lewis was on sale on Amazon today, so I went with that one.

I will keep Homeland in mind for next time, though, it sounds like it could work. (Or maybe I will put it on my Netflix list and check it out myself!)

Yay!! I think your dad will like it. It and Sherlock are my two favorite Masterpiece Mystery series currently on. (I also loved Foyle's War)

My husband really likes Boardwalk Empire!

Or what about Deadwood? Another series from HBO. Both DH
and I loved this series.

I liked Deadwood. We bought it for them a while back but I don't think they ever tried it. He'd probably like Sons of Anarchy but I don't know if his wife would like it. Thanks for all the ideas!
