View Full Version : What are you giving your older boys?

My older boys are 6 and 9. So far they are getting Legos and Angry Bird stuff. This year that is all they seem to be asking for but I would love to be creative and do something unexpected of them.

The twins who in the past get things passed down and didn't receive much last year, are going to really enjoy this year. They are 3 1/2 so it is going to be really fun for them.

The baby 15 months is also hard as he is a boy and gets so much passed down and I don't just want to add things to our hours, ya know.

Any ideas? DS#1 loves angry birds, iPad playing, Legos and building things. DS#2 is very creative and love art (I have new crayons and all that stuff). He is getting a Lego, some AB stuff and the pigeon workbook someone posted a few months ago, a dvd and that is about it.

any ideas?

The thing they are not expecting are remote control helicopters for both boys almost 9 and 5 1/2.

We too are doing lots of Legos.

Guinness Book of World Records for my almost 9YO. When I volunteered at the school book fair all the kids in his class were looking at it. Found it at Costco for around $15.

Also picked up the Klutz book on Spiral Drawing because I remember having one as a kid that was always fun.

5 1/2 YO is getting some Imaginext stuff. Pirate Ship and Space Shuttle deals plus more planes from Grandma. He got the aircraft carrier and some planes last year and really enjoys it. All of his friends seem to be getting the Batcave or other super hero pieces of Imaginext but we're not that into super heroes here.

My DCs each receive one big gift from Santa (plus stocking stuffers & books) and one gift, book, and article of clothing from DH & I...and whatever their sibs decide to gift. ;)

DS is almost 10. He is getting a Legos set - either Star Wars or Ninjago. The big gift is a 7" tablet. Since he has become quite the avid reader of chapter books and comics, we figured this would be a good, yet $$, gift for DS. The model has yet to be determined. :( Toss up between a Galaxy Tab 2 and Nexus 7 (both of those models run on similar Android OS and have access to Google Play, incl Nook and Kindle apps, but the Galaxy has expandable memory and a rear camera and the Nexus is the more popular choice on various boards) OR the Nook HD, which is a bigger brand with expandable memory & more accessible parental controls but has a more limited app store, only Nook book access, and no camera (which can be a good thing). Overwhelmed!!

The books we have purchased are the Guinness book mentioned above, the Spy book that was an Amazon lightning deal a couple weeks ago, the new Wimpy Kid Third Wheel book, and the other 2 Wizards of Mickey comic books from the series that he LOVES!! We are buying the digital versions for whatever we tablet we buy. I was planning on buying some Minecraft but will save those for his Jan birthday gift. :)

Anyway...HTH... :) Good luck!

DS#2 is 12 and he's getting a trebuchet kit

My older nephews are getting this for Christmas (15 & 16 years old, different families). I still like to get them an actual gift in addition to giftcards.

ETA, my DS1 (9) is really into animals/birds. His uncle bought him a really nice bird feeder and seed for his last birthday and it was a huge hit. We got him some youth bird watching books as well as some decent binoculars to bird watch.

From us he is getting Bose on ear headphones. We have a friend who works for Bose so luckily we were able to get them at a discount.

From Santa/stocking he is getting
Gods and Heroes pop up by Matthew Reinhart
Minecraft gift card (he plays on the iTouch but wants a computer account)
Arrows for his bow he got on his birthday
Minecraft foam sword and pick axe (maybe...haven't ordered this one yet)
Small pack of Yu Gi Oh cards and an album
Wooden Checkers (http://www.amazon.com/Wood-Checkers-Stackable-Ridge-Natural/dp/B000JMGJXQ)

From my parents he is getting a Lands End hooded fleece bathrobe. He requested a soft robe.

From in-laws he is getting Kirby Returns to Dreamland for the Wii

From my aunt he is getting a Minecraft t-shirt

From my grandmother he is getting D'Aulaires Norse Myths (http://www.amazon.com/DAulaires-Norse-Myths-Ingri-dAulaire/dp/159017125X) (DS loves mythology).

From another aunt he is getting a Manga drawing kit (http://www.amazon.com/Faber-Castell-Creative-Getting-Started-800095/dp/B001DUELTM). He saw this at the art museum and really wanted it so I added it to his Amazon wish list. DS is an avid manga reader.

My nephew is 7, almost 8. He is overwhelmed with toys so lately I have been going a different route for him. For his birthday I gave him a personalized towel from LE, quality goggles, and dive sticks.

For Christmas I bought him the new Star Wars popup book. DS has the first one and it's amazing. http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Galactic-Pop-up-Adventure/dp/0545176166/ref=pd_sim_b_1

I also bought him a personalized popcorn bowl from etsy, which I plan to package nicely with some popcorn. DN loves popcorn and eats it almost every day after school. http://www.etsy.com/listing/89431738/personalized-personal-popcorn-bowl-red?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=syndication&utm_campaign=GPS&gclid=CLn1t7v3i7QCFUjZQgodZncACg

My older boys are ages 7 and almost 9.

They are getting:

-wii games
-That enclopedia talking pen pkg that ppl mentioned at costco, except I got ours at sam's.
-pokemon stuff (guide books and pokeballs)
-nerf gun
-nerf bullets
-disney set of zurg, woody and buzz lightyear guns for all three kids (my youngest is 3)
-hex bugs stuffing stuffers
-disney mugs and vinylmation of their favorite character for stocking stuffers (we just got back from WDW last wk)
-magic school bus dvd set
-maybe some lego stuff (I have alarm clocks and some sets in my gift closet)
-maybe some science kits
-perplexus (reg and rookie)
-science and history books, new and used, while this sounds like a boring gift, my boys love this sort of thing. I can get a lot of good books for only 25 cents used at the library used book sales.

Honestly, I am reluctant to give them too much. I did a huge purge of toys over the summer for a garage sale and still feel like they have too much stuff. So, mostly I'm just telling family members who ask what they'd like, some ideas and I am not really planning to buy much of anything, esp since we just went to disney, to me that's a huge treat.

Can someone explain Minecraft on the Xbox vs the PC. My 2 DS (9 & 6) play it all the time on the ipad but want to be buy the PC version. They are getting Xbox for Christmas but from what I am reading you need Xbox Live??? I am so confused.

My 9 yr old is getting a lot of guitar stuff as he plays guitar & is really into it
- Small guitar amp
- Guitar tuner
- new Dairy of a Wimpy Kid book
- New headphones for both as they are always losing them

6 yr old
- Skataboard
- Xbox game ( not sure which one yet)
- New Bank

Both are getting one of those Water Mule packs from my parents as we are big hikers & skiiers & they are always thirsty.

o_mom

9 yo - Minecraft, Puzzle maker, <something else TBD>, long underwear, book (probably HP that he hasn't read yet)

7 yo - MP3 Player w/acc., <something else TBD>, clock radio, long underwear, book

5 yo - LeapPad (replacement for one that has a cracked screen - LF replaced for free), clock radio, long underwear, book

All three together are getting our old computer assuming all goes well when I upgrade the OS next week. We are also going on a family trip after Christmas, so I'm counting that as part of our gifts.

We haven't decided on the breakdown between bday and CHristmas yet (bday is a few weeks after Christmas).

Lego Mindstorms
Nerf Hailfire
Estes Rocket kit (we've done these before)
Model car (like the old fashioned kind you have to glue together...will be tedious but DS1 can handle it I think. My dad loves doing these, and I know it would be a really fun thing for them to do together while they are visiting.
Books
First pocketknife; will complete a tote and chip "class" with DH
xbox Lego Starwars game

Wow, I"m looking at your lists and thinking my kids will be disappointed.

Gator is 9yo and is getting:

Lego Queen Anne's Revenge
A remote controlled crawling Spiderman
An edible Zombie-making kit (makes gummy brains, etc.)
A microscope set
Wreck-it ralph tshirt
Cha Cha is 7yo and is getting:

Jack Sparrow tshirt
Lego City Mine set
Bug- lab kit
A solar-system light-up, move & talk set (I bought this before I saw the mixed reviews. :( )
Paper-jams drum and amp
I'm getting the kids a zip-line for their new yard and a tire-swing too.

I used to do more gifts for them but they get way too much. They will also be getting stuff from 3 sets of uncles and aunts as well as their grandparents and some cousins.

Since we are moving into our new house in a few months and they are each getting their own room, a bigger bedroom set (though all are used) with brand new bed linens, I just felt like they are already getting some big stuff in the new few months.

DS is age 10. We're getting him:

Kindle Fire, cover, and fast charger
Big Nate color comic downloaded to Kindle Fire
4 "I Survived" series books
Diary of a Wimpy kid book #7
Super Mario ghost "boo" plush (plush = stuffed animal)
green Yoshi plush
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning 3DS game + free plush Yak
remote control helicopter
stuffed Adventure Time Finn and Jake
Plants vs. Zombies vinyl figures

He's also getting a ton of stuff from my parents and two sisters, and probably a few gifts and/or money from DH's family

I don't think slacklines have been mentioned here before. The boys are getting one from Grandma (Mama suggested it).

My 8 year old is getting some Lego sets, Skylanders stuff, 2 DS games, books, and some sports jerseys.

Lego sets and a tremendously long list of Pokemon DS games were all he asked for.

My boys would love that! I might have to hold onto that idea for the next birthday.

I have 2 boys, 9 and 7 and they are getting the following (not all from us):

-ipod touches (DS1 has asked for one for over a year and he's going to be soooo excited)
-Skylanders Giants starter pack and a couple regular Skylanders in stockings
-Legos (DS1 likes the Hobbit and DS2 likes Star Wars - they are each getting a large set from Santa)
-"flat" hats...DC BMX hats that have a flat brim
-Science kits from Steve Spangler Science http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/product/6-test-tube-experiments-rack
-Compound bows, arrows & arrow holster http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PO5QW2/ref=oh_details_o06_s02_i01
-sleeping bags (nice Kelty ones that I got from woot.com)

DS2 picked this out to give to his brother (street hockey "one-timer"):

My 8 year old is getting:
Light up snap circuits
Claymotion studios software (to make stop animation movies)
Bike computer
Lego Minecraft
3DS paid off (he put $80 of his money towards the purchase and I will give it to him for Christmas forgiving the last $60)
Hardness testing kit with samples
$20 gift certificate to local independent book store from brother

In his stocking he is getting:
Minecraft tshirt
headphones
book light
Comic strip drawing pad
drawing pencils
chocolate rocks
$10 itunes card

He was very difficult to shop for as he's not really wanting more toys and there wasn't any one thing he really wanted.

If anyone is looking for the Star Wars lightsaber toothbrushes posted above, my local Rite Aid and Walgreens carries them. My DH picked up the blue and green version on the way home from work.
They were $3.99 each.

Xbox 360 + a few games
New composite ice hockey stick
Full size metal hockey goal
YFliker F3 scooter
Perplexus epic (my add-on)
Magic set (my add-on)

I also like the snap circuits pp mentioned. I'll have to look at those for a gift from his grandmother.

9 yo - Minecraft, Puzzle maker, bicycle light kit, long underwear, book (probably HP that he hasn't read yet)

7 yo - MP3 Player w/acc., Knee hockey set, clock radio, long underwear, book

5 yo - LeapPad (replacement for one that has a cracked screen - LF replaced for free), case for Leap Pad, clock radio, long underwear, book

All three together are getting our old computer assuming all goes well when I upgrade the OS next week. We are also going on a family trip after Christmas, so I'm counting that as part of our gifts.

Updated this now that we have finalized things... this doesn't include stocking stuffers. We are trying to stick with the want/need/wear/read this year... cheated a little on the two 'wants', but far less than normal.

They are also getting a zip line kit with money their aunts sent.

I also bought him a personalized popcorn bowl from etsy, which I plan to package nicely with some popcorn. DN loves popcorn and eats it almost every day after school. http://www.etsy.com/listing/89431738/personalized-personal-popcorn-bowl-red?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=syndication&utm_campaign=GPS&gclid=CLn1t7v3i7QCFUjZQgodZncACg

I bought my son a few Kernel Season's Popcorn Seasonings as a stocking stuffer. :)

I had never heard of this and had to look it up, but it looks super cool. I think I'm going to get one for DS1's stocking! He got a new bike this year and he and DBF like to go on bike rides together.
