What else is nearby the Ikea in Atlanta? We will be driving through before Christmas and thought we might stop at Ikea since the closest one to us normally is 6+ hours away. I was wondering what else was close by that we might make a quick stop at.

The Atlanta Ikea is located at the edge of the Atlantic Station development, and has an open-air, Main Street-like shopping area. If the weather is nice, you might enjoy having lunch, and walking around the stores. The stores are mostly national ones, but there may be a few that aren't super common (West Elm, Athleta, H&M). www.atlanticstation.com

It would be a great "rest stop" while on a trip. There are lots of places to walk like the pp said.

Where is American Girl?

American Girl is far, far away in the northern suburb of Alpharetta. You'd need to pack a lunch--it's about 45 minutes on a state highway. I guess I should admit that I'm a city girl and do not venture OTP (outside the perimeter).

Just remembered that the Center for Puppetry Arts is just outside the boundary of Atlantic Station. GREAT, kid-friendly shows and some lobby exhibits, too. If you are going in December, def. buy tickets ahead of time and get there early, it is the most popular time of year, some shows sell out, and seating is general admission.

I think American Girl is probably closer to 25-30 mins away, all highway.

There's also Legoland at Phipps Plaza.

There's the Coca Cola tour, Atlanta History Center, Imagine It Children's Museum- really, tons of stuff. Are you going to be on I-75 or 85? N or S? Thinking maybe we can come up with a few more things.

We will be driving in on I-20 coming from the west. I have a hotel booked in Buckhead. We will drive in on the 22nd - probably early evening. We thought we would get up and go to Ikea the next morning for a while. But, if there were some other fun things to do that weren't terribly time consuming, we might would consider that too. We only have about another 4 hours to travel to get to my parents home from Atlanta, so we have some flexibility.

Ahhh! So you're staying the night- there's also the Atlanta Botanical Gardens light show, and the Pink Pig, which isn't terribly exciting, but it's cute. It's been around a long time. It's just a little holiday train ride thing. The lines might be crazy that close to Christmas, so if you do it, I'd be there when it opens. The Varsity is another local landmark.

You'll drive past the Capitol building too. Point out to the kids that the dome is gilded with real gold. School children from Dawsonville (home of Georgia's gold rush) raised the money for it.

Oh, and you'll also be near a Trader Joe's, if that interests you at all. Pick up some candy cane Joe Joes and dark chocolate salted caramels!

The Children's Museum would be a great one. Since you have some flexibility and could avoid traffic, American Girl would not be that bad to get too.
