Do you need the stadium to play with/battle with the spinning tops?

Nope. The official beyblade stadiums are pretty flimsy and easy to break anyway. My 3rd grade boys have one and use it (even though it's got a few cracks in it) but I picked it up at a rummage sale last spring; otherwise I don't think I'd have gotten one. My sons are happy to use the lid from a plastic bin or between their legs lying out on the floor to create a makeshift arena. They've also used cardboard boxes ~ those are great to use in a car while battling away. :) And then of course they just like to make the tops spin wildly on the floor or on the tabletop when not battling.

No you do not need a stadium but they do fight better in a stadium.
