View Full Version : how can i tell if the ipad i bought is a 3rd. or 4th generation?

we have not opened it but now am wondering if its the 3rd or 4th. at the store they were not sure? on apple web-site i cannot find any model# to help me determine what it is.

If its a fourth gen it has the smaller lightning connector.

Eta...just read you haven't opened it...
Eta2...on back of box it will say it includes lightning to USB cable if its a 4.

The third generation takes the 30 pin adapter and the fourth generation is the lightening adapter.

you can tell by the model number. If the second character is a C it is a 3 and if it is a D it is a 4.

For the 64GB:
MC707LL/A is an iPad 3
MD512LL/A is an iPad 4

also you can tell by the price you paid. The 4 is about $50 more than the 3.
