I don't need a bargain, I just need the bag. A bargain would be nice, but it's not paramount. Where do I go about finding a messenger bag, kind with the flap and such. It's for an older man in his 60's to use on a daily basis. So faded and frayed will not work. I could go to a dept. store, I guess? Any suggestions?

Do you want leather or fabric/canvas or either?

REI has great fabric/canvas options. For leather, I like coach or ebags.com. Nordstrom's also has some nice ones. Depending on his style, I like this one:

Is timbuk2 too casual? They hold up really well--as in I think our kids may inherit ours because they look brand new still--and you can get them in plain black. I have seen them in sporting goods stores (Sports Basement) but that might be because they are local for me?

i am a big tombihn.com fan. they have a number of messenger bags. they would last a good long while. they are not made of leather though. and to me, they are pricey. but worth it. very very well made.

I think I'm gonna go for leather, but oof, maybe I need a bargain after all! Can't afford $500, but I'd spend $200. Great leads, thanks so much. I never considered coach. He'd love most of those options, but the price ... maybe the outlet, I'll call them. Thanks for the tips!

Timbuk2 is nice! But it's not his style, I don't think. I'll take a look anyway.

Wait, I had to post this. I found this on Nordstrom's site for $2,100. for a bag. The equivalent of a laptop bag. Ferragamo. I don't understand what makes a bag cost that much money. Is it to impress? To show how high one's status MUST be to own a bag with the Ferragamo name, and this $2,100 is your dues into such a club? Or is there actual funciton here that I am not seeing? My mouth is agape, but then I also giggle at the silliness.

I won't be indulging in that one, but again, lots of options, thank you so much again!

Banana Republic often has leather messenger bags I could see a 60 yr old carrying. I've found super cheap ones at the outlets or in their clearance sections.
