Could you share your favorite sugar cookie recipe?

Update: I did not have enough time to let things chill over night nor did I have enough time to do roll out cookies, so I saw this recipe for almond flavored sugar cookies and decided to give it a try. The result: YUMMY! A nice twist on a sugar cookie and they are really soft and fluffy.

Here's my favorite sugar cookie recipe:

6 eggs
2 cups butter
2 cups sugar
4 tsp. Vanilla
6 tsp baking powder
7 cups of flour
1 1/2 tsp. salt

Cream eggs, butter, sugar, and vanilla. Then add dry ingredients. Roll dough onto a floured surface and cut out. Bake at 375 for about 8-10 minutes (don't over bake or they will be hard).

I don't know where I got the recipe but I love it! I've been looking for years for a good one. Called Thick Sugar Cookies:
Cream together
1c butter
3/4c sugar
Mix in
1 egg
1/2t vanilla
1/2t almond extract (optional- my addition and it makes them yummy!)
Stir dry ingredients together then add to above
2 1/2c flour
1t baking powder
1/4t salt

Chill an hour, roll out, cut out, bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes

Frosting:
1/2c butter
3-4c powdered sugar
1t vanilla
1/3c milk

I used this recipe and followed the video exactly and all my cookies taste of baking soda. :irked:

I am also looking for a good butter cookie recipe. I guess I'll have to ask my MIL and translate it all into English.

Hmmm. I have made them several times and seen them recommended here as well. Did you just not like them or was there something really off about them? My mom doesn't like them much because she prefers a crisper cookie. But her recipe is just too fiddly for me.

I have tried so many recipes with terrible results. This one, however, is awesome:
The trick is to let the dough get really cold. preferably letting it chill overnight

http://savour-fare.com/2009/12/24/santa-claus-is-coming-to-town-holiday-sugar-cookies/

Recipe
Sugar Cookies
Adapted from from the LA Times Cookbook, originally served at the Valley Hunt Club in San Marino, CA (where I took swimming lessons when I was five)
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp. almond extract
zest of 1 lemon
3 eggs
3 2/3 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
Cream butter with sugar, soda, salt, and flavorings until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour and baking powder and beat until combined. Chill the dough until firm, but if you leave it in the fridge at least overnight or for a few days, the color and flavor will be better.
Roll out on a floured surface (the thicker you roll, the softer the cookies, and the dough is easier to roll out if it’s very cold) and bake at 450 degrees 6-8 minutes. Cool on racks, ice and decorate.
Icing
For the icing I just put a bunch of powdered sugar in a bowl and add heavy cream until it is thin enough to brush on smoothly – really a glaze more than a frosting. I brush it on the cookies and let dry.

This one cut thick is yummy.

I don't even bother rolling it out. I shape it into a slice and bake log then chill. Roll into deco sugar then slice and bake. For butter cookies i love the barefoot contessa shortbread via zabar.

I let it chill overnight but the texture of the dough wasn't right. The taste wasn't there either. I should use more sugar sprinkles next time, that makes everything better!

:rotflmao: Mom tried a new recipe this year and didn't like it. She threw those cookies in the freezer for the kids to decorate under the theory that by the time the kids get done piling icing on, no one will be able to taste the actual cookie anyway.

I am also looking for a good butter cookie recipe. I guess I'll have to ask my MIL and translate it all into English.

The recipe has no baking soda in it..... it does have baking powder.....

I've never made that particular recipe, but have made the soda/powder mistake!

That's the one I use.

One of my dearest friends has an AMAZING recipe that uses powdered sugar instead of granulated... She's talked about sharing, but as she makes & decorates cookies as a side business I won't press the issue.

There's no baking soda in the recipe at all! Maybe you used baking SODA instead of baking POWDER???

I used the same recipe for my best friend's baby shower favors and everybody loved them! My best friend is still talking about them over a month later! Odd. You definitely need to refrigerate the dough overnight like it says to make it easier to roll out and keep it from sticking. I followed the reviews and when I rolled them out I used powdered sugar on my cutting board instead of flour.

I used this icing with them: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/sugar-cookie-icing/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=sugar%20cookie%20icing&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Recipe

I tweak this recipe all sorts of ways, 2/5 whole wheat flour, 3/4 the sugar. This week I did the wheat flour, used 2 tsp of cinnamon, and juice and zest of one lemon. It's a very flexible recipe!

The recipe says baking powder but the video says baking soda and all the reviews under the video emphasize baking soda. That's what I put. Anyway, I will try another recipe some other time as I like a crunchier/crispier cookie.

This is the one I use too. LOVE it. I tried several others before stumbling on this one. I use 1tsp vanilla and 1tsp almond flavoring, instead of the 2tsp of vanilla.

I've used this recipe for years and have always followed it as written. I never watched the video (which did not exist when I started using it) or read the reviews. Maybe that's a good thing. :)

The cookies are definitely on the softer side though. So if you like a crunchier cookie, this isn't it.

Yeah, I definitely make it exactly as written. Never saw the video. What a very strange substitution or mistake to switch baking soda and baking powder (in a video--can definitely see making the mistake irl).

I've never seen the video and just followed the written directions. I know my mom made the mistake of accidentally using baking soda instead of baking powder when she made pancakes over the summer. They were awful and inedible-- definitely bitter and tasted like baking soda! We had to throw them all out.

I want to do rolled sugar cookies w/ the girls tonight but don't want to mess w/ icing. Anyone use any of the above recipes and just put the colored sugar sprinkles on them? Oh, I also only have 3 eggs on hand, and no oil, so need something that takes butter or shortening, and just 3 eggs. Plan on mixing them up this afternoon and putting in the fridge til we can bake this evening as a family.

You have to put sprinkles on prior to baking.

One reason I love the recipe I posted earlier is that it doesn't require a lot of ingredients. Just 1 egg.
