Nook, kindle or another? I'm putting together a silent auction basket with books, and I'm thinking that putting a nook or kindle in the basket might be good if we have enough $ donated. Which would be better?

For kids I would want a color e-reader, I would get whatever you could find the best deal on.

If it's for older kids I think a basic $69 kindle would be fine. DS1 is 9 and reads only chapter books with no pictures and has been using my kindle keyboard for over a year. I'm thinking of just getting him his own since there's been times we've both wanted to use it. If I do, he'll get the basic one.

A first grade class will be making the basket - so I'm guessing some of the donations will be for the 6-7 year old set...

For my daughter, we did not want a nook color or kindle fire. We wanted a dedicated reader. Mainly because I don't mind if she stays up late reading but I don't want her staying up late playing games.

This exactly. I don't limit books but do limit games!
