We've always used Turbo Tax, but at $30, it's kind of pricey. Our return is really straightforward nowadays. I'm thinking I'll save my $30 and just do it by hand and mail it in.

When I was in grad school (so before mortgages, etc) I did mine by hand. These days I find the $30 for turbo tax worth the piece of mind (and yes, I acknowledge that I have bought into the learned helplessness that is the US tax code :)).

You can also do a free electronic form. It's the same as the paper form but you submit it electronically and save paper. It's on the IRS website.

My FIL, a retired math professor and engineer, does his own. I buy Turbo Tax :)

I'm an engineer, so maybe I can :).

We have 1 job (DH's), a bit of bank interest, 5 people, std deduction, and child credit. No self-employment, no itemizing, etc. I feel like it'll take me longer to do it in software than by hand, too.

Neat. I didn't know that. That sounds like a good option! thanks!

My mom did theirs on their own until Turbo Tax came out in the late 90s and never got audited. I last paper filed my taxes in 2001 or 2002. When I got married in 03 I switched to Turbo Tax. For $39 it is worth it to me. I get the Deluxe from Costco, which also has my state income tax program as well.

My engineer husband just does the free online forms.
Try it, I suspect you'll either think "why did I waste money or TurboTax all these years" or "Never again."

I definitely think it will be faster for you to do it without a program.

My bank offers access to Turbo Tax for free, have you checked with yours to see if they have any offers?

We have always done our own - very happy that the electronic forms now seem to be free for all!

I have re-run through the Turbo-Tax trial (free, but you can't print, save, or file) once or twice out of curiosity, but was not inclined to buy it.

I've used TaxAct on-line for about 5 years and love it. They have a free version but I use the deluxe for $10.
