This has been bothering me for YEARS! Which way do I put my duvet cover on my bed? Does the opening/buttons go towards the top of the bed by your head or towards the bottom?

I usually put them on the top of the bed, but I think it could work either way.

I've done the buttons at the top for several years, but there was a gardenweb thread a few months back that I bumped into where people insisted it belongs at the bottom. I told DH and he started putting the duvet on that way (I make him stick the comforter inside the duvet cover because he has an easier time with his long arms. THat's my story and I'm sticking to it).

Buttons at the bottom! I'm aghast at the notion of the buttons chafing against my chin or chest when I sleep! ;)

:yeahthat: And we have a encasing for dust mites in between the comforter and the comforter cover and the zipper for that goes into the comforter cover first to ensure that I never ever touch the zipper with my feet.

Bottom of the bed! Ours has buttons, it would annoy me to no end to feel it near my face.

See, I've never had the buttons bother my face. Apparently I'm low maintenance that way, LOL. But I've since switched to buttons at the bottom, because I feel like I should!

Omg, I guess I'm the only loser who's always put the opening up towards my head!!!!! I think because I don't like seeing the buttons/opening at the bottom of the bed-- it just looks so noticeable to me (we don't have a foot board). I guess the buttons/opening have never bothered me or my face!

I did get cheap Ikea duvets for DS2's bunk beds though and they just have an opening on the duvet with no flap or buttons so I put those with the opening towards the end of the bed since the opening would be tucked in and covered by the foot boards. Plus, those duvets have a decorative trim up on the top, opposite the opening so I wasn't as confused!

Thanks everyone for solving a lifelong mystery of mine!!!!

I only switched in the last year. Like you, I don't like looking at the buttons on the bottom of the bed. We don't have a footboard.

Opening at the foot of the bed.

I tried putting the opening at the foot, but it never worked well. Our duvet cover is about 8" longer than our duvet, which is good because our footboard fits really, really tightly to the mattress. So the only way to squeeze anything between is to have only the duvet cover need to go through. The duvet itself stops at the top of the footboard. (Does that make sense? It's difficult to put into writing!)

So ours opens to the head of the bed. The buttons are inside a placket, so we don't notice them. We always fold the sheet over, anyway. Our duvet cover is white, so we try not to touch it.

ETA: I voted "depends" but maybe should have voted "top"?

This is my reasoning as well.

We have the opening at the bottom, but I have always wondered this myself!

Don't feel bad OP. I have the buttons at the top, too and they've never bothered me a bit! I figure it is my bed I'll do whatever I want, lol.

Honestly, with the craziness of my life lately, sometimes the buttons are on the bottom, sometimes they're on the sides--the pattern is kind of tricky. I'm just lucky to get the duvet cover back up on the bed. But when I'm paying attention, I like them up top.

Ok, I've got a legitimate reason to keep them at the bottom. One time when the bed was made with the opening at the top, my small dog tried to bury under the covers but managed to get inside the duvet cover by accident.

When she tried to get out she got lost in there and fell over the edge of the bed. She ended up being suspended inside the duvet, dangling on the side of the bed, hammock style, a foot above the floor. She had no way to get back onto the bed and no way to get down to the floor. I could not figure out where she was for awhile and I started to kind of panic about why she wasn't coming when I called her.

She was fine when I got her out of there but definitely more than a little freaked out. So buttons at the bottom always in this house!!

Bottom only! I grew up in Europe, they only use duvet covers and down duvets there and it never crossed my mind to put them on top ;)

I was actually wondering this recently! Ours are at the top. The buttons are kind of on the inside of the duvet, so they don't hit my face.

Maybe I should switch it, but the buttons hanging off the bottom for all to see (not really sure who that is, though ;)) might bug me.

I've been using duvets for 20 yrs and nobody told me how to do it, but I've always put the buttons/opening at the foot of the bed. I guess I never thought about putting the opening at the top before. The point of the cover is to try to keep stuff out of the comforter, I would imagine that if the opening is toward the top, it would be easier due to handling, sneezing, etc. for stuff to get through to the comforter inside of the duvet, which defeats the purpose of the duvet to me.

I can't have buttons, tags, or zippers near my face.

Thank you for asking this! I have always thought (and still think) it goes on the bottom...who wants buttons in my face. My duvet has a design on it that seems to confirm this.

My Mom INSISTS it igoes on the top of the bed and switches it around in our guest room when she stays over. I explain to her my reasoning and she showed me the piping around the duvet which she said should be at the bottom...not ugly buttons (with no piping). Hmmm, made me think..

We usually have ours on the bottom. However, when one side gets smooshed then we flip it around to even it out. So it depends :)

This is such a funny post. I must be a weirdo as well as we have always had our at the top. I was always told that you don't sleep under the whole duvet your bed should have layers. So you fold your top back anyway and sleep under your sheet or light blanket under the duvet.

I don't like to see the buttons period and ours have covers that complete cover them anyway so you can't see them.

I never thought to even wonder about this. I guess I have been doing it wrong ! :)

While I don't know what way is technically correct, I have always put the buttoned end at the foot of the bed. I don't like to have the buttons near my face. DD's duvet cover is a flap without buttons, and I think it looks better at the foot of the bed too.

So how do we find out the answer? Just because the majority do it at the bottom doesn't mean it's right, I'm actually starting to think top is "correct" presentation wise but who knows!

What would Martha Stewart say? ;).

I keep my buttons near my head. I think it looks better when the bed is made as the opening is hidden under the pillows. Also - I button my cover on the inside - this way the buttons are facing the comforter rather than my face :p

We were always top of the bed until we went to Ireland a few years ago and I noticed the closure at the bottom, so we switched. All of our covers must have had the buttons in a placket so I never felt them or I it would have bugged me.

DS has a Serena and Lily duvet with HUGE toggle buttons, but when I put the buttons at the bottom the the Star on the comforter doesn't look right - two points at the top instead of one. It drives me crazy, but he doesn't seem to notice the buttons so leave them at the top because I can't stand looking at an upside down star!
