My latest thesis assignment has us examining pop culture. Some of the ads, both print and television, that we were checking out in class today REALLY brought me back to my childhood...Love's Baby Soft, Calvin Klein jeans, Sun-In hair lightening spray, Absolute Vodka, and Marlboro Man to name a few. These were not necessarily favorites but they brought me back to my younger years. What are some of your favorites or some that just stand out in your memory??

DH and I both have told our kids numerous times about the cartoon owl asking how many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop commercial. Plus I loved the Pepsi commercials with the Harlem Globetrotters (I got to see them film one and one of them Curly, bought me an ice cream :D )

This one is still on, not sure which cable channel. "One, two, three, crunch! Three!"

Have a coke and a smile
there used to be more clydesdales on tv. (and those frogs!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVcbasIb8lQ

The super catchy Dr. Pepper commercial "I'm a pepper, you're a pepper, he's a pepper, she's a pepper, wouldn't you like to be a pepper too".

I love the coffee (Maxwell house?) commercial that was shown at Christmas every year until recently when they redid it. The son comes home for Christmas and the sister meets him at the door and they brew a pot of coffee letting the parents know he is home. I have older brothers so I think it always resonated with me. I don't even drink coffee.

As a hippie-wanna-be I always loved like to buy the world a coke

And this "keep america beautiful" commercial had a big impact

And for print, I always remembered that coppertone little girl ad, so dumb but I remember it.

My all time favorite is the Detroit-area commercial for Faygo Pop and featured the much-loved Boblo Boat:

The Wendy's commercial with the old lady saying where's the beef. I liked some of the other ones mentioned, too.

"Mikey likes it!" - I was so disappointed when I didn't like life cereal.
I love that Christmas coffee one too.

I remember local spots as well, like "Larry H. Parker got me $2.1 million."
And "its cal worthington and his dog spot!......go see cal, go see cal, go see cal. "

Totally remember the tootsie pop, two all beef parties, and where's the beef too!

When I saw that Elektra replied, I knew she'd mention "Cal Worthington and his dog Spot". It's burned into the memories of all of us SoCal folks! There was also one for Pete Ellis Ford in SD, but in LA they had Pete Ellis Dodge, same jingle, different words.

Nationally, I loved the "My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R..." commercial. I also totally loved the Coke song. I think it may have been an actual song at some point.

I bet when my dementia has set in and I can't find my way around the block, I will still know how to get to Pete Ellis Dodge- "long beach freeway, Firestone exit, Southgaaaaate."

I grew up without a tv so can't contribute my own memories, but when we were growing up, if we said "Mommy" in a certain tone to my mom, it would remind her of a commercial from when she was little and she would break out into, "Mommy...what is it dear...I want a Salerno, Salerno cookie..." so that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw this post.

That's the tag line for Clairmont Toyota or Clairmont Ford now I think, has been since the late 90s when I went to school at State.

Cal Worthington commercials are legendary. The Long Beach Cal Worthington Ford is the only one left in CA I believe, the Sacramento dealerships closed in the mid 90s to early 2000s.
http://www.mydogspot.com/
http://jalopnik.com/5975780/the-ten-bestworst-local-car-ads (if you go to the bottom of this page, Cal Worthington is right there at #1 and it is great montage).

Other stuff I remember from my childhood:
Mc Donalds ad with the girl remembering her piano recital music of Fur Elise by singing about Mc Donalds food

OJ Simpson Hertz commercial ca. around the mid to late 80s when he was in Naked Gun movies

9 Lives

Wheres the Beef? from Wendy's

We are the World promo for Live Aid

I always wondered why the people in cigarette ads were always so perfect looking

Denise Richards will always remind me of Bonne Bell skin care products

Not really an ad, but in July 1990 Cameron Diaz (http://www.whosdatedwho.com/tpx_2757392/seventeen-magazine-united-states-july-1990/) was on the cover of Seventeen Magazine and I knew then she'd be something big then. In 1988 I thought the same thing about Milla Jovovich (http://img2.bdbphotos.com/images/orig/e/d/edkoddloi4dcldik.jpg) who went on to model for Maybelline cosmestics like Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington. I was fashion magazine obsessed by the time I was 11 (she was 12 so I thought it was very cool), and it has never really went away.

Mark Wahlberg in Calvin Klein underwear

Claudia Schieffer, Cindy Crawford, and Anna Nicole Smith as Guess girls.

Paula Abdul modeling Reebok high tops (the ones with two multi colored tongues).

That was Folgers. I LOVE the smell of ground coffee and spend more time than is normal sniffing the coffee aisle at the store. I don't drink coffee but if I did it would be Folgers just b/c of those commercials. I switch the channel or fast forward 99% of the time for commercials but always stop for Folgers. I think they brain washed me :)

There are so many commercials that make me want to scream. The ones with the pig that talks makes my skin crawl.

The one commercial I always remember from my childhood is a Lifesavers commercial.

Tweet tweet!
Twiddle twiddle!
There's only one candy
with a hole in the middle!

What made it so memorable for me was my Dad's rendition of it. My brother was about 3 or 4 when that commercial was popular, and my Dad would sing,

Tweet tweet!
Twiddle twiddle!
Blair's bum is a thing
with a hole in the middle!

Naturally, we all thought this was hysterical. To this day, all of my siblings sing this whenever we see Lifesavers. :)

An Idaho Potato commercial, "Hey ho I'm from Idaho."

A DC area commercial for martial arts, "Nobody bothers me. Nobody bothers me, neither."

The McDonalds commercial with a bunch of kids happily walking in a row to McDonalds in yellow galoshes.

The My Buddy commercial.

My sisters and I loved the "I Love NY!" tourism campaign of the early 80s. I also remember the jingles from Petland, D'Agostinos, The Milford Plaza, and beautiful Mt. Airy Lodge from living in NYC in the 90s.

Oh! And Catskill Game Farm! "You'll find adventure...at Catskill Game Farm...adventure is in our nature!" I can also sing the Thompson's Calm Bar and Barbos Furniture jingles from memory. If you went to Cape Cod as a child, you probably can too!

I always got a kick out if the accidental "you got your chocolate in my peanut butter. You got your peanut butter on my chocolate" Reese's ads. Even as a kid I wondered who was walking around so clumsily with an open jar of PB! and I'd never seen an actual adult eating a giant candy bar.

OH MAN, I'd almost forgotten about the D'Agostino commercial:

And I've passed by the Milford Plaza on trips into the City with the jingle in my head:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwlvkUMsDgI

Here are two of the I Love NY commercials:

Celebrities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qG72jPE9qw

Real people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gsyQeV2aR8

My 8th grade field trip was to Mt. Airy Lodge. (For non-area peeps, here's what we're talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2758nEdA7M)

It was pretty pathetic - just above a cheap motel. I heard that they've done some major renovations, but I still have the memories of 18 teenage girls sharing a motel room to change clothes after using the pool and I just can't shake them.

Friends & I still joke about the champagne glass tub, which we (obviously) did not see in person, but all talked about.
