Dd loves Popsicles. And ds is allergic to apples. Which makes it hard to buy "healthy" Popsicles. So I decided to get a Popsicle maker. I decided to try this cheap Hamilton Beach one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005EPRHGG/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

Thanks to Amazon prime, it should be here in two days and I'm planning to go to the grocery store tomorrow.

So, any suggestions for relatively healthy Popsicle recipes? (Or just stuff to buy and freeze.)

Thanks!
Catherine

One of the mamas here did a daily Zoku blog for awhile. I haven't seen the Hamilton Beach but thought it was similar so the recipes should work.
Heaven on a stick.

I just buy flavored yogurt or a big tub of vanilla and add fruit to it.

I tend to just make our regular smoothie mix or use leftover smoothie to fill up the popsicle mold. When it is really hot out, the kids think it is funny if I pull out a smoothie popsicle as breakfast ;)

Honestly, most of the time I just pour plain old soy milk into the popsicle molds. Couldn't be easier. DDs love them, even though they aren't very sweet.

If I want to get 'fancy', I sometimes add a bit of cocoa powder too.

When strawberries are in season:

slice or roughly cut-up 2 cups of strawberries
add 1/3 cup sugar
put in a pan, bring to a simmer (stir to dissolve the sugar)
simmer gently for a few minutes
cook on low heat for about 5 minutes.
add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, optional, and turn off the heat
chill and then pour into popsicle molds.

I found this online. It's actually a recipe for strawberry ice-cream topping but it also makes GREAT popsicles. You can add a lot less sugar (I usually add 1/3 cup sugar to 4 cups strawberries). Personally i like to add some sugar because you get a better texture in the final popsicle.

In the fall, if you can get your hands on some Concord grapes, they make great popsicles too. Simmer them with a bit of water and sugar, press the cooked pulp through a strainer, and use the strained pulp (minus the skins) for your popsicles. Fabulous.

Thanks everyone! I bought orange and carrot juice at TJ to try and some honey Greek yogurt to try, maybe with some smashed blackberries. Hopefully the Popsicle maker works well and I'll be back to try more of your suggestions!
