DS2 is going to a birthday party for a girl in his preschool class tomorrow. It is a luau theme held in a dance studio. I have two boys, so I don't buy girl gifts that often. Do you have any recommendations for gift ideas for a girl turning 5? Unfortunately, I don't know much about her specific likes and the party is tomorrow, so we have to shop at a B&M store sometime today. When I asked DS2 what she likes, he said Lalaloopsy, although he might be remembering when I saw a Lalaloopsy doll on sale at Target and asked him whether this little girl might like that for her bday. Thanks!

Something crafty, like perler beads or sticky mosaics...

my 5 year old is super into lego friends...maybe one of the little sets?

any craft stuff really...it's a "making" age :)

my child isn't into dolls AT ALL. however... i can't think of a single gift that she got at her 4th birthday party (we didn't have a "big" party this year) that she didn't like :) she got a baby alive and it was her favorite thing for a while... even without liking dolls.

so , i'm not sure i'd worry too much :) craft supplies are always good though :)

I don't even know what these are. LOL

Would Michaels be a good place to look for the craft kits?

Or any kind of paint-your-own Melissa and Doug thing. They always have a ton at TJ Maxx or crafty stores like AC Moore.

I can only say the one gift we had to hide (and I was glad we didn't open in front of the guests!) was a Lalaloopsy doll last year because DD thought it was too scary.

DD loves "girl" Legos, arts and crafts, stuffed animals, games, books, anything princessy or girly girl too.

Hello Kitty stuff has been popular with my 5 year old DD and her friends. They also like Lego Friends and Squinkies.

I just had this same problem and I bought a small purse and filled it with lip gloss, hair brush, mirror, and hair ties.

I agree with craft stuff. My DD would be thrilled with just about anything from the craft aisle at target- tape, markers, beads, stickers, clay. Perler beads are great!

Lula would have gone ape over these! And I think the little purse with lipgloss and brush etc. would be a huge hit, too.

My DD just turned 5, and she LOVES the Disney princess story CDs she got for her birthday. They come in sets of 3, and there are at least 2 of them. Target sells them. They start with songs (SMS from the movie, some new) and then narrate the story. DD listens to Tangled over and over again.

She also likes the Melissa and Doug stamp set she got. But I as a mom do not like "crafty" things because she can't do them by herself, ateast not without making a mess.

I like to buy crafts because they get used up and not take up space in the house. Then you don't have to worry about things like, "Will the parents be shocked I bought a Barbie? Will they freak if I get lip gloss because it's makeup?" Unless your child can tell you something specific about a kid, crafts are safe.

Yes, go to michaels for the perler beads -- don't forget a 40percent off coupon from the paper or online!

I like to get these perler bead buckets, along with something else small.

I looked all over the craft and toy aisles at Target today and did not notice these beads. Too bad. They look cool.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions! After spending way too much time looking for this gift, I ended up getting a Lalaloopsy Drawing Portfolio, which comes with stencils and stickers and markers for creating outfits for Lalaloopsy dolls on pages in a bound book. Seems cute and it was on clearance, and there is a chance the girl likes Lalaloopsy stuff. I also picked up a Melissa and Doug Decorate Your Own Wooden Butterfly Chest. So I went kind of crafty, based on the suggestions here. Thanks again!
