Wi-fi instead of data plan?

Is this possible with an iPhone? At home and at work wi-fi is available so I never use the data, so it seems like paying for the data plan is a major waste of money. But is it possible to drop the data plan and just use wi-fi with an iPhone? Verizon is our carrier if that makes a difference.

I have been told a million times at Verizon that ALL smart phones come with mandatory data plans. I haven't tried to seriously bunk the system, but it sent me for the simple phone each time since all I use mine for is texting and in-network calls to family.
