View Full Version : Ruby's Egg Dye? Anyone remember this?

I've been trying to make dyed Easter Eggs like I did when I was a kid, but found out they don't make the egg dye we used to use. It seems that it has been discontinued. It was 3 glass bottles, one red, one blue, and one yellow with plastic stopper tops that looked like bunnies. It also had a wire holder for the eggs.

These dyes made the best swirl eggs. I know that there is a way to do this with food coloring, but I think I remember the color not being nearly as vibrant.

Does anyone remember these? Has anyone successfully replicated them with another method?

TIA!

I do!! I really miss it. We still have some hallowed out eggs that we dyed using it. My extended family has not been able to find it in years :(.

My dad did swirled eggs years ago with some sort of paint floated on water in a big cooler. I can get specifics from him if you'd like. They are gorgeous.

We always used it with hard boiled eggs...so we don't have any of them...I just remember it being so fun to mix the colors and find out what sort of swirls you'd get. I was looking for it last year and had no idea they went out of business. I swear I remember my mom using that stuff well into college - which was mid-late 90's for me. I read last night that they went out of business in the 90's.

I would love it if you could find out the specifics!

Yes, I've seen them on ebay...but I'm just not up for spending $20. When I think how we used to toss the leftover dye every year!...Agg!

Thanks, I think this is what I'll try if I don't find anything else. I just have a recollection of trying to do this with food coloring one time (my dad lost his job and my parents were not spending ANY extra $$) and the colors were extremely pale compared to the commercial dye. Perhaps this method would work with a more concentrated dye...but what? I'm not versed in food grade dyes.
