Any ideas i haven't tried? this is one of my worst times of it yet....I got a bad cold and now I have a tickle that makes me cough all night to the point of vomiting, lost my voice from coughing, sore all over from coughing, cannot sleep from coughing. I even tried DS's Nebulizer and it felt better for a few minutes but that is all. Vicks on the feet does nothing to help me and I'm limited on things I can take because I am nursing.

Clover honey. Steam shower. Warm beverages, with caffeine if possible. Keep drinking as much as you can. You need to do your best suppress your own cough.

Signed,

A Professional Cougher (and cough variant asthmatic).

ps. Good luck.

Benadryl helped me last week. Dried me up to allow me to sleep and not cough as much. Hope you feel better.

:yeahthat:

Technically liquid Benedryl is best for cough suppression but the pills work fine for me.

I had whooping cough over the holidays, it was brutal. I finally caved and took codeine after about 2 weeks. I should have done it sooner. I wanted to kiss the pharmacist.

No advice, but hugs! That sounds awful! Feel better soon!

I echo what everyone else says, but I recently read that eating marshmallows helps? Don't know if that's true or not... I hope you feel better soon. You're due for some healthy time all around!

If you're coughing because of a tickle or "dry spot" in the back of your throat, try sucking in a sucrets or cepacol lozenge. It will numb the throat and keep you from triggering your cough reflex.

I read the marshmallow thing, too, but haven't tried it.

A few weeks ago I had the same type of cough, I had to get up and leave the room in the middle of the room to avoid waking DH and DD, who still sleeps with us (I'm also nursing). I'd take a couple of tablespoons of honey, and it helped. I actually kept a jar of honey on my nightstand for middle of the night attacks.

I also second the throat lozenges.

You can take Cold Calm when nursing. It may not stop the cough but it has helped with my recent colds while nursing.

I think I must technically have cough variant asthma as well. It's awful and the inhaler does not help. Thanks for all the ideas. I'm particularly intrigued by the Marshmallow thing! Never heard that! I think I have tried everything else; I've had this issue since I was a kid.

Advair works for me. I took it while pregnant (after my pulm. bombarded me with studies about the safety of inhaled steroids) and nursing.

It's a daily med, right? I just hate to take something daily for a condition that doesn't truly affect my daily life, ykwim? My doctors have brought it up a couple times but it just seems like over-kill. When I am not sick, I rarely have issue. I mean, if I tried to run across a football field I would have a problem. But even aerobic exercise is ok if I work up to it slowly. My big problem is when I am sick (which has been pretty constant the last few months) so I just wish I could find something that would truly just treat the attacks.

Have you visited an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist for your cough? I went through the same thing a few years ago (I lost a lot of weight due to the severity of the cough making me vomit). I went through about 3 months of coughing before I went to see the ENT and I was diagnosed as having acid reflux. I got on Prilosec for 3 weeks ( I think) and the cough finally went away. An ENT may be able to pinpoint the true problem.

That is so interesting! I have not been to an ENT. My grandfather actually was one and how I miss his old-school wisdom. I do have other symptoms of acid reflux but the cough is something I've had since a child so I doubt it is related. I will remember that though in case there is a connection.

If you try honey, I have read that Buckwheat honey is the one that really seems to help a cough. What about some antibiotics? I know that's not always the answer but there's something going around here that only abx will clear up cough wise.

I, too, don't have any problems until I catch a cold. And having been loosey goosey with taking Advair regularly, I promise that the severity of the coughing is much, much worse while taking Advair on a more regular basis as opposed to taking it at the beginning of a cold and then playing catch up. From what I understand, you are actually harming your lungs and airways in the long run by not treating this regularly.

Too bad you can't take Tylenol with Codeine or can you? I'm assuming no. The time I had a cough like that the Dr. gave me that and said to just take enough to make the cough stop. One tiny sip and I was good. That stuff works!

I'm going through this right now. Not pregnant, but codine is a no go for me (a small dose lasted 18+ hours with me, and trying to function with the dizziness and tunnel vision and exhaustion just wasn't fun!)

For me, honey and a cup of ice chips. Kind of like the Sucrets, the ice will numb my throat and stop the tickle.

good luck!

No idea if it's safe for nursing moms, but there's a throat spray that kind of numbs you throat for a while. I'm not asthmatic or anything, but I had a really irritating dry cough in the middle of the night and sprayed some of this on my throat, and it seemed to help stop the cough so I could get to sleep. I just have the Walgreen's one so not sure of the brand name.

ETA looked at the bottle, the active ingredient is phenol and it says to check with your doctor before using if pregnant or nursing
