View Full Version : Update: Ds in hospital - P&pt request

firstbaby

Another update: I can't thank everyone enough for the P&PT. DS got to come home on Sunday night and he's doing well. His ANA and Lyme both came back negative. So, when we left there were still a couple of tests not back but they are confident that the sinusitis, flu b and pneumonia (with affusion - not sure about spelling) were the culprits. We go back to the Infectious Disease doctor next week. It is so nice to be home and be a family again, but I have to admit I'm starting to process everything from last week and I feel very overwhelmed. I also feel on edge - like how could he have been so sick and on these powerful abx? Why didn't anyone else in the family get sick? I hate to have these thoughts, but I'm just on edge hopeful that they really did get everything checked out. Again, thank you to everyone so so much. It was a super emotional week and it was uplifting to know all the P&PT DS was getting from you all. I will update again after the ID appointment if there's any change in what they feel is going on with him.

Update on 3/16. They are still waiting for a few more tests to come in like ana and lyme panel. plus they are monitoring his ck levels - theyve been elevated over the last few days. but we know he at least has sinusitis, flu b and pneumonia. they did an us last night to decide if they need to drain the fluid or not. thank u so much for tr p&pt. i know we still have a ways to go and more tests to see through. his eyes have been able to open more and hes been more aware and alert so that has been great!

It is a really long and crazy story, but we took my ds to the er on Monday, came home and then went to another more pediatric focused er on Tuesday where he was admitted. Since Monday he has had two cat scans, a chest X-ray, spinal tap, MRI, and lots of blood draws. We are still trying to figure out how everything fits together. He has been through soooo much. To add another layer, my day's company was sold and they are transitioning to the new company. Well, they pushed the close date up and it goes in to effect...tomorrow. So we are going from an awesome ppo to an hsa and I can't get anyone in benefits to call me back. I am so tired and stressed and I just want my active happy little guy back. I haven't sen my other two kids bc they have ds in isolation and I just can't leave him. Please if you can spare some P&pt that ds will turn a corner here, we will get answers, and the insurance nightmare will somehow not happen, I would really appreciate it. I don't want ds to see me cry so I sob next to his bed every night.

Just heard back from benefits person and they are aware of our situation. There is no work around to the insurance transition going tomorrow but at least I got my questions answered. Thanks all for the P&pt. I'm starting to break here a little and needed some support.

Thinking positive thoughts for you, your ds & your family.

Please take care of yourself, too!

My ds2 was in the hospital for just a few days, and though we knew what was wrong and he was not in grave jeopardy, the stress and the lack of sleep while staying with him there REALLY got to me. Try to get someone to relieve you for a bit so you can at least get some fresh air.

I am so happy to hear that your DS is home and hopefully on the road to recovery.

I would definitely request a copy of the Lyme testing. The VAST majority of doctors rely upon the CDC's surveillance/reporting criteria, that was not intended to be used for diagnostic purposes (and misses about 1/2 the actual cases per numerous studies). (1) make sure that they ran a Western Blot (not just an ELISA); and (2) if they ran a Western Blot, be sure to see if there were any positive bands. If there are positive bands, I would be happy to point you to research re. the significance of various bands (species specific bands are highly indicative of Lyme even if the patient does not meet the CDC's surveillance criteria). I did not catch all of your son's symptoms, but the Lyme and ANA test orders show that the doctors are at least considering Lyme (which is great). Just make sure you are not ruling out Lyme prematurely because the tests are not very accurate (particularly in the first 6 weeks). Spinal taps for Lyme are even less accurate (only catching about 10% of the cases from what I have read). Hugs to you and your sweet boy.
