They are illegal in the US. There was a big post about it last year.

They've come up with a new design for the US.

I told my mil this after she successfully travelled back from Germany with over a dozen of them. She couldn't believe it! My kids are old enough that they're not safety hazards and I think they're awesome. I understand why they're not sold here though.

They were listed on Orlando's Groupon today. I think it was a deal for like 2 dozen for about ~$14. I was going to buy them but there was no guarantee they would arrive by Easter.

I ordered the chocotreasure ornaments (same thing but an ornament) on Amazon at Christmas. Haven't seen them in a B&M store. I do have to say though....I've had Kinder Eggs while in Europe, so I was excited to see a variant that was legal here....but wow, the quality of the chocolate leave *a lot* to be desired in the Choco Treasure!!

A friend from overseas just brought 3 Kinder Eggs over with them... lucky they didn't get stopped at the airport! I am so excited to see DS1's face on Easter Sunday when he opens one (that's if I don't devour them all before then... I'm getting all nostalgic just looking at the box in my kitchen (must.find.willpower).

Crazy that they're not allowed over here. I don't recall there being a spate of choking incidents with the Kinder Eggs in Europe... and they've been around since I was a kiddo.

ETA: Just read this comment on a blog post about these eggs being banned. Made me smile (and sigh inside, as it's so very true):
"So assault rifles are still ok, but chocolate eggs with toys inside are lethal. What a country!"
