View Full Version : CL lowballers! (update in OP!)

just wanted to give an update..sold my BJCMD today :bighand: . Buyer initially asked if i'd take $210, i countered with $270, and we settled on $250. Woo!

I think in total i got a dozen emails for the listing. About 2 or 3 were lowballers asking i'd take $100 (whatever!). Then i got 2 others who lived 2-3 states away, but had a relative who lived in a suburb about 100 miles from me, and wanted to know if i'd meet them halfway to meet said relative. Um no. as other posters said, i guess i just have to ignore these emails.

now off to unload all my other stuff... lol :)

------
i am reminded again of why i hate CL sometimes. I am listing a 2011 BJCMD in excellent condition, along with some accessories, and i am asking $295 (retail price was $470 retail). Within an hour, some guy emails and asks if it is available. I say yes, and he replies what i will take for it, $150? I kinda scoff to myself and just reply and said $275 minimum as it's in really excellent condition, and it wasn't used that frequently (i had like 5 strollers at one point). He replies with a counter asking for $175. Um, ok, now I don't even want to bother replying.

It's dumb because I KNOW i can get at least $250 for it. Heck, I sold my used BJCM *SINGLE* last year (with belly bar) for almost $200. And yeah, at the time I remember several people asking for me $50 for it (LOL). So I know I just have to wait around...but still, it's annoying to have to deal with it.

I guess just don't understand why people bother lowballing and then continue to try to lowball. IMO, if you are lowballing just for kicks (to see if by some chance, seller agrees and you can get something $$$ for cheap) that you probably don't really need the item in the first place and it's not even worth the money you are paying for. If it something you really want, then you should be willing to pay a decent price for it. Yes, i know it's "business" and to not take it personally, so i dont' really feel insulted, i guess i am just annoyed by the gall of some people.

I'll probably be listing our strollers for sale soon too. Oh, I am looking forward to the CL fun:)

I'm going to try listing something like "$200 firm - I will not respond to any emails offering less" and then I really just won't respond to any emails offering less. I'm sure people will try anyway...but hopefully it'll cut down on the lowballers. Hope you get it sold! Trying to decide what I should list my BJCED for...

Some people are just rude.
I'd respond back and say "for you, the price is $300".

I think some people don't know the stroller you're selling is worth anymore than any other stroller. Don't know why they don't just move on but they just can't resist the urge

Since you can buy a new 2011 BJCMD for $299 I think $295 is really high and I would probably 'low ball' that price if I wanted that stroller. But it depends on what your CL is like of course. My CL seems to be full of bargain savvy shoppers. I lowered the price on the thing I'm currently selling to what *I* think is a bargain and I only got one person e-mailing me and they aren't even going to buy it. Lowball me, please! Just get this thing out of my house! (That's my counter-CL BP.)

I'm pretty sure that in one of the circles of hell you have to buy and sell everything on Craigslist.

Oh I just totally lol'd!

When I listed my beco, BJCS, and other higher priced brands I did list as $$ firm. I figured if I didn't have any takers I could always relist at a lower firm price. It did cut down on low ballers. I hate the back n forth with the totally out of their mind low ballers.

on my CL, i saw people selling 2012 SINGLE bjcm for $175. i sold my 2010 bjcm single for at least $175. So I think asking $150 for a 2011 DOUBLE, with accessory is really lowballing it. If i had been asking for $200 and they said $150, that is one thing...but why bother with trying with just 50% of what i'm asking?

i guess the thing i don't understand is, if there is something on CL i really want, i'd either pay close to what was asked (within 10%), or if i didn't think it was a fair price i wouldn't bother and would look elsewhere.

also, where would you even buy brand new 2011 BJCMDs? is it a closeout deal? Honestly i do not think these lowballers are savvy shoppers, i think they are either just being annoying cheap folks who try to lowball just for kicks (and don't know how much the stroller is worth). when i was selling my less-than-1-yo Chicco keyfit i got several lowballers asking me for $25, and ON TOP OF THAT said they couldn't come all the way to my town to pick it up, and would i meet them someplace 30 mins away from me. I did get a laugh out of it...

I realized I kind of answered this post as if it were in the stroller forum instead of BP. Sorry about that! I totally agree it's inappropriate to offer 50% of what someone is asking, but I just thought in this situation since your asking price is a lot higher than what *I* would expect to get on *my* CL then it makes a bit more sense. (People in the stroller forum are always saying that accessories (unfortunately!) rarely get you a higher price on CL.) But maybe I should expect more and then I'd get more. I often pass on a deal I got instead of turning a profit.

I sent a lowball e-mail once on a CL stroller. I really wanted it and couldn't pay what they were asking and thought their asking price was kind of unreasonable. I didn't have much to lose. Except I didn't get the stroller. Boo hoo.

hmm, i didn't know about the albee baby deal (though i'm betting most people around here wouldn't know). in a couple days if it doesn't sell i i wil i ower the asking price. i wouldn't ask less than $250 though, just to have some negotiating room. i think $150 is still pretty low for a BJCMD that is fairly new.

i just got another email from another person, asking if i would take $100 cash! LOL. FIrst off, is there any other way to pay on CL than cash? So funny.

Maybe it's regional but I have had a lot of people bring checks. When we sold our B-ready for $350 the family brought a check, and no cash. It made me very nervous, but I felt like we had priced the stroller borderline too high, and needed to unload it so we took the chance.

Otherwise I have had the opposite problem from you. My husband will put our stuff on CL (mostly furniture) and, because he is nervous about selling it, price a lot of it so low that we are inundated with offers. This is for CL in a relatively small area. Then we have immediate sellers remorse that we obviously priced it too cheap!

Oh, the wonders of the delete key in email! Really, it was nice of you to respond that the price was firm. Anything else, just delete.

Does it help if you put "firm" in the listing?

Ugh!

We want to sell our single BOB Ironman, but there's one in like new condition on our CL for $100 right now. It's driving me nuts. Who sells a like new BOB for $100??

Lowballers suck! Sometimes it's so low I want to respond with a snarky email. My pet peeve is when people list for more then you can buy new or within a few dollars, why would I buy your 3yo Bob for $400, when I can get a new one for $460?

Someone who stole it or "found" it and doesn't know how much it is worth.

Or someone like me who just wants to get rid of it and really just doesn't care that much how much they get for it.

I think of CL as like a big old open air market. I thought bartering was just part of the system. It would never occur to me that offering someone a low price would be insulting. It's just part of CL. I get this is the BP and it's frustrating but I think that many, many, many people think that any offer is fair game. You can always say no, ignore or delete.

At least you aren't getting slammed with porn spam like my DH did when he posted a TV for sale on CL! He must have inadvertently included some key word because Holy Guacamole, he had to send all CL mail to the spam folder for weeks, even after he pulled the listing!
