How does cash back work for travel sites (Expedia)

I see ebates offers a small % cash back for hotel bookings etc. How does that work- is it on the initial deposit, the whole vacation or something else? Is it the best cash back option? Trying to find a way to ease the pain of an expensive vacation!

I used it recently for a rental car and for airline tickets. The tickets posted right away because I had to pay for those at the time of reservation. The rental car was not paid for until we returned it (no down payment req at time of reservation) and the cash back did not post until well after we had gotten back from the trip.
