I need a pretty basic-ish sewing machine. I have a simple embroidery machine but it is too difficult to change it into sewing mode. I do need a blanket stitch as far as must haves. Simple but versatile would be great. Inexpensive is always nice. TIA!!

Not inexpensive, but I adore my Bernina. It's never been trouble.

Janome or Kenmore are good brands.

I got this one at Amazon over a year ago:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-CP-7500-Computerized-Sewing-Machine/dp/B0039YOVSG/ref=sr_1_16?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1364917307&sr=1-16&keywords=brother+sewing+machine

I've been very happy with it. The list price on all these things is a joke, they never actually sell for that much. There are some that are cheaper as well that are good basic machines, but I wanted one that had a little growing room once I learned more.

Try Ikea. Seriously. I am getting one from them since I am a novice and really need one to sew curtains and pillow covers with an occasional duvet. There are tons of reviews online.

I have a Bernina and it is worth every penny. I wish I would have started sewing on a Bernina because it would have saved a lot of headaches and seam ripping due to a so-so first machine.

I am a true beginner and bought one to sew patches on dd's uniforms! I am happy with my Baby Lock Denim pro. It's an older model (I got it about five years ago) and built SOLID, easy to understand. I got it from a local sewing machine and vacuum cleaner shop, per their suggestions. I found a lot of mainstream machines to be very flimsy looking.
