That long thing in the living room you sit on (not the love seat, not the futon)- what do you call it?

Definitely a couch for me. My grandmothers from the Midwest (we were all in SoCal at the time) always called it a Davenport and I thought it was so funny/cute.

Sofa now, but I grew up calling it a davenport, too, since that's what my parents from the Dakotas called it.

I use couch and sofa equally, so I voted Other. I don't know how to pronounce divan. (DIE-vun? di-VONN?)

I usually say couch, so that's what I voted. But I do also say sofa.

And I think it is pronounced de-van

I use both couch and sofa also. I pronounce divan di-VAN.

I may use couch more often than sofa, but for me they are interchangeable.

I say "couch" but my midwestern Dh's grandma (she's 101) says "davenport". So did my east coast grandpa.

I grew up (in the Pacific NW) saying couch. I picked up 'sofa' as I've lived across the country. But I think mostly I say couch.

I'm couch, but do hear sofa.

Only people I've heard say davenport are over 90.

That's me. I grew up calling it a couch and hearing other's calling it a couch (with the exception of one aunt who called it divan) but when I got married and started all of our military moves the movers got me into the habit of calling it a sofa.

I voted chesterfield for fun. I'm surprised to see it included and thank you for your consideration of Canadians :) I hope I didn't screw up the poll. Being from the Midwest, originally, I actually call it either a couch or a sofa. My grandparents all called it a davenport.

Couch. But sometimes sofa.

A coworker called it a davenport once, and I was confused for months. I thought a davenport was something like a carport or such!

3rd generation California native here and most of the time I call it a couch, but sometimes I'll call it a sofa. It just depends, but I voted for couch. The fancy couch in my Great Grandma's house when I was growing up was a settee (sp?), but every other couch was a couch or a sofa. I grew up with couches that had hide a beds, and our current couch has one as well. It doesn't get used much but since we are short on space we opted for one. We never called the couch the hide a bed unless we were asking to open up the hide a bed.

Oh, yeah, this is a completely scientific poll. :hysterical: The idea for this was triggered by my DS saying sofa, and even though I use sofa more than couch, his saying it just sounded silly. Quickly, my thoughts were covering all the different names for that specific piece of furniture and Chesterfield happened to be one I knew.

Chesterfield when I was a kid, then couch, and now I'm an adult and bought one with my own money, I named it "sofa".

I say couch now bc DH does but I used to say sofa. And I've owned divans (di-vaan) but they're not the same thing as a couch or sofa. More like a day bed without a back.

I use them interchangeably. Generally if I'm talking about needing or purchasing one I say sofa. But if I'm yelling at the kids to get off one, I say couch. So maybe a sofa is a hypothetical object but the couch is the real-life object being ruined by the kids and cats.

couch or sofa interchangable

eta: third generation Californian, I voted couch since it was my instinct when I read the question

Reminds me of when I lived by Chicago and lots of my friends mom's called the family room a "French room"....my family is all from the south so I was like a WHAT? Where is the French room??

I use couch and sofa (usually couch). My grandma (no longer with us) from Nebraska used to say davenport. I loved that :)

Chesterfield is a Canadian term?! I had no idea! I use couch or sofa, and have regularly heard chesterfield, but I have never heard the term davenport before this poll! Learn something new everyday! :D

Couch is the only word for me :)
Sofa sounds like its the 50's IMO
Never even heard of calling it a davenport (sounds like a place you park your car!) or chesterfield (sounds like a city).
I'm from CA, FYIW.

I'd call it a couch in the family room, but a sofa in the more formal living room.

Everyone around me called it a "couch" when I was growing up.....except the ones who didn't repress their Pittsburgh accents; they call it a "cahch".

Sometimes I say "sofa" though. "Davenport" is new to me.
