View Full Version : Every emotion in the book - Update in OP, post 74

I am 42. DH and I went through fertility treatments TTC #2. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and my THS would not stabilize. We had one chemical, one miscarriage, got I think 14 fertilized eggs that made it to Day 5, went through PGD testing and they all came back abnormal. We were heartbroken, but were comfortable if DD ever asked why she didn't have a sibling we could tell her we did our best. Last July we decided we were happy with our lives, wanted off the emotional roller coaster, and we were comfortable "just" the 3 of us. Private school would be a total non-issue financially with 1 child (the public school where we live is not an option) and my business has sky-rocketed and now involves a lot of international travel. DD has never said she wants a brother/sister, is very social, and one of the happiest kids I know (if I do say so myself ;))

Fast forward to this morning and my positive HPT...I know you hear about when people stop trying it happens, but I'm 42 and had abnormal PGD results. I calculate I'm at 5.5 weeks and the line was extremely dark, unlike my chemical. I went and had HCG levels and progesterone tested this morning so that I can go back and get a differential on Monday before I hop on a plan to go to Europe. I'm happy, nervous, scared, and confused because I had honestly been happy with our family of 3 and how work has been going and the long term financial position we will be in as a result of the new work, and not to mention I got diagnosed with cancer (melanoma) three weeks ago, so am focusing on trying to keep myself healthy.

DH is cautiously happy, but if this one doesn't work out we agreed we need to figure out some sort of birth control, because I'm not sure I can take another miscarriage.

Seriously, is this a delayed April Fools joke ;)

Oh boy..off to the drugstore to get pre-natal vitamins. We gotta give this our best shot.

Update 1 - Just got my labs back from yesterday. Progesterone 27, THS 3.9 (increasing Synthroid from 125 to 150), HCG 3371. Thoughts?

Congrats! We did 3 IVF cycles, 2 which ended in m/c, one was cancelled halfway through b/c of an unresolved ectopic, and after 6 years of primary infertility (5 losses, including 2 ectopics that left me hospitalized for a week each time) we finally conceived our take-home daughter. The positive HPT left me in shell-shock...and frankly with a bit of PTSD. I went to a grief counselor to see me through the entire pregnancy. It was so worth it! I'm not 42, but in so many ways I understand that feeling of "being done" with grief and loss and frustratingly long paths to conception. It feels so good when your body works right for a change! What a blessing!

Congrats and prayers for a safe (mentally and physically) 1st trimester. Mentally I think that's the hardest part. Hugs and safe travels!

 I get it. I have a pretty similar story and honestly, it took quite a bit of therapy to be able to bond properly w/dd2 b/c after so many m/c I refused to believe it could happen.

Congrats!! Sending you sticky, happy, healthy pregnancy vibes!! A year ago I was in you shoes...and today I'm cuddling with my beautiful surprise miracle. Hoping you'll be in the same place in a year.

We TTC #1 for over 3 years. Had 2 m/c's, one after our first IUI and one after our first IVF. Lots of testing, tears, and darkness. Our second IVF brought us our incredible DS1, but the pregnancy was filled with anxiety after our previous m/c's. DH was not onboard with a #2 since my endo assured us we'd never get pregnant on our own, I have thyroid issues and a-typical PCOS. DH had PTSD after what we went thru to get DS1. I finally broke him and he agreed to do 1 more IVF to try for another DC. As we went thru tests for insurance approvals to do the IVF I couldn't figure out why AF hadn't come after I took meds to induce it for testing. Took an HPT and literally stood staring at it for over an hour as I experienced every feeling known. So I get it. Wishing you a stress free, joyful pregnancy!!

And I hope the melanoma is easily treatable.

We, too, had a long, hard struggle to #2, and similarly got to the point where we said, "done." DS (also in a $$$ private school) was just over 11 when we conceived DD. Talk about shock and awe, right? We know how you're feeling! She's almost 1 and I still look at her in bewilderment.

All of your levels look pretty good, actually. My TSH is around 2.4, so I upped my Synthroid to try to get it lower. My RE team liked it to be below 2.2, and better to be below 2.0 for optimal conception during IVF...however, you're already pregnant! Don't say at all that you "probably" know your chances of this being a healthy baby are low. Those egg tests are VERY new. Even though they say they can predict with over 60% success rates how "good" they are...the sample sizes have been pretty small. My girlfriend did her 5th IVF with abyssmal looking day 3 transfers and got her now 4yo son. No man can know the mysteries of life. Try to hang on to hope and shuck the anxiety. Don't let the fear of the unknown steal your joy.

Those numbers look good to me! I know nothing for TSH but 27 progesterone is higher than mine has been at that point and the hcg # looks good, if they did an early u/s they should likely be able to see at least a gestational sac with that number. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.

Congrats and good luck with the ultrasound today!!!

I had a surprise pg with DS3 (I had minimal problems conceiving my "planned" kids and was "only" 35 when he was conceived, but we were using BC). Anyway I did need go to a counselor for the first trimester as I was basically in shock. It helped a lot. He is now a happy, healthy, and much loved 21-month old and yes, my other plans took a bit of a hit, but that's OK!

Congrats! Having gone through the infertility route myself and I can only imagine how stunned I would be with an unexpected pregnancy. To be honest, after so many cycles without success, once I finally got pregnant with the twins I was stunned and in shock. It was very difficult for me to switch gears and I did talk to a therapist about it. it was very helpful in helping me work through my feelings and get past my fears. Best of luck to you!

So, hcg did what it should and doubled to 6972. They saw a sack but weren't sure if the yolk was there. I am retroverted so that also adds to the mix. I go back next Tuesday. If it is a healthy pregnancy they should see the yolk then!

2nd surgery after melanoma came back moderately dysplastic, which isn't great but of course is better than melanoma. Third surgery scheduled for Monday.

Dh and I are just going with the flow...

Just got back from Ultrasound #2. They went from seeing just a gestational sack a week ago to a gestational sack and well defined properly proportioned yolk sack. Doctor thinks maybe a fetal pole/heartbeat. He said I'm measuring around 5.5 weeks, but based on calendar I should be 7 weeks. Still very touch and go, but he said there was tremendous growth from last time.

Has anyone measured behind and "Caught up"
I have longer than average cycles because I have PCOS. I went through IF to conceive DS1 and didn't ovulate at all in 9 months of ttc up until I got pg on an injectables cycle (first time I had ovulated while we went through ttc, clomid, injectables, etc.) . DD and DS2 came along with just metformin, and I got pg relatively easily in comparison.

I can't really go by dates with any level of certainty. WIth DD, I never had a warning period and got pg while still BFing DS1 (so cycles hadn't really resumed at all). I was on like day 100+ of my "cycle" (not really a cycle at that point LOL!) after having an episode of breakthrough anovulatory bleeding that went on for a few weeks. But I hadn't had a real, normal period up to that point. So dating by LMP was not possible. I wasn't really temping because I was still BFing and not getting uninterrupted sleep, so I just didn't bother.

As a result of wacky cycles and IF, I always had early USs. With DD, I had an early US in office with an OB I had just started seeing. She thought we had an empty sac, and that based on my beta # she thought there should be more development. It was kind of a "this could go either way" situation based on my read of what she was thinking. She did then admit that her in office US equipment was not the best. The date she came up with was about what I had calculated in my head would have made sense. A week or two later they had me go to the large university hospital's US unit and everything was great and there was a HB. Things did end up matching up with about the date range I was thinking. Going by beta #s alone was not accurate in my situation. With DS2 I had early dating and it all matched up. I had more normal cycles at that point and early US dating lined up with about what I would have figured (was using OPKs somewhat intermittently, etc. at the time)

I know my cycles are more like 35-38 days on average due to PCOS, and I ovulate maybe around day 23-25 or even a bit later.

eta: congrats to you, of course! How wonderful. I know how it feels to be very, very cautious about things, but try to enjoy this as much as you can!

westwoodmom04
04-23-2013, 05:29 PM
It's been a long time but with ds, we thought his conception date was about 2 weeks earlier than it actually was. I don't remember how this played out with early ultrasounds.

I think this is great news!

With DS1 we did a monitored femara/trigger/iui cycle (I just have pcos but we were so over ttc-sex after almost a yr.) I have very early u/s b/c my MFM has me start lovenox as soon as they can confirm a heartbeat.
At 5 wk exactly (my hcg was pretty high so RE brought me in to check for multiples) there was an empty gestational sac and "maybe" the very beginning of a yolk sac but no way visible on the picture they gave me. At 6w3d we had another u/s and though they saw a heartbeat (at a perinatal center with the best equipment) it was only like 112 and he measured about 5 days behind. The next week he was 3 days behind, by 9 wks he was on track, by 13 wks he was a few days ahead. They almost moved my due date back a week based on the u/s but good thing they didn't b/c he was a 7lb4oz 36 wker. And that was with us knowing exactly when I ovulated and everything.

You might not have even been 5 wks yet when you saw an empty sac which would be normal. The fact that there is growth and a yolk sac is encouraging. Hopefully next time you see a nice strong heartbeat! Thinking of you!
