View Full Version : Need plus size dress for wedding

I guess it's my turn to ask for advice for an upcoming wedding. I wear a size 16/18. I thought I had a couple of dresses that would work, but my sister said they were too casual. (My sis is the step mother of the bride.) I really prefer to shop IRL since fit is tricky and I'm not very good at making returns in a timely manner. It is an evening outdoor wedding. It will be hot. The bride prefers guests to wear long dresses with flats (of course I could wear anything I liked but I am fine with her preferences). I have a maxi dress that I like, but it it a casual print and has a built-in bra, which gives it more of a beachy look IMO. I've looked at the usual Lane Bryant, Torrid, and Avenue and didn't find anything. Any other ideas of where to shop? I don't usually go to the mall, but if a major dept. store has more options, I have pretty much any store available in the DFW area. Thanks!

ETA: What do you think of this dress? http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/plus-size-pleated-belted-maxi-dress/101322295/602 I could wear it with a shrug to cover my arms if needed.

I think that dress is pretty...love the color.

What is your budget?

Have you looked at igigi.com? I won't make suggestions of specific dresses, because goodness knows I have basically no sense of fashion, but I have found dresses their before and think they have a pretty good selection. It is a little pricey though - most dresses are $100-200 so may not be in your price point.

I think what you picked is really pretty.

Modcloth has lots of good dresses but not a ton of long ones.

There is a gorgeous dress at Boden that is kind of similar to the dress you linked to.

Nordstrom has some nice dresses. Some you can only order online, but free shipping and you can return to stores. Suzy Chin has some cute styles, and you could try on that brand in store to get an idea of fit. Some Macy's have better plus size sections than others. In my city, there's one with a whole half floor instead of the usual corner.

I am going to a wedding in 2 weeks and I think I will go get that Dress Barn dress! $60 is about right for me to spend on a "wear a handful of times" dress. I will pair it with a pashmina. Thank you!

I spent an hour in Dress Barn last week looking for a size 18 dress to wear to a wedding next month. I didn't try on any maxi dresses though, but I like the one you linked to. I bought this one: http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/plus-size-surplice-cherry-blossom-dress/101325666. (http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/plus-size-surplice-cherry-blossom-dress/101325666)
I thought all the dresses were well made & comfortable FWIW.

Thanks for mentioning igigi. I've never gotten anything from them, but I love their models! And they have some pretty things. I'm looking to spend under $100 though.

Sign up for a free trial with Gwynnie Bee. They have some great dresses. Sizes start at 10. I've been pretty happy with it so far. They carry igigi, Eloquii, Kiyonna, etc..

Despite the "old lady" reputation, I've seen some great dresses at Coldwater Creek recently. I'm currently obsessing over this one http://m.coldwatercreek.com/product-detail/64142/acropolis-maxi-dress

I second Nordstrom. You can do ship to store, try it on, return right there if need be.

I think the dress you linked to is a gorgeous color, but I don't think it would be flattering on a plus size woman. Too blousy up top, and the skinny belt over lots of fabric would not help. I wear a 12-14, and that would make me look huge.

I'm still stuck on the bride having a preference on what the guests wear! That's a new one...

ETA: I think the one Mariza linked to would be more flattering. Nice color too.

You're right about the fit. They didn't have that exact dress at the store, but I tried on a similar one and it did not look good. I love the Mariza one too!

I knew I should have ordered that before posting! It's completely off the website now. OP, I hope you got one.
