DS1 really wants a camera for his birthday.

What is recommended for kids these days?

DS1 purchased his own adult digital camera at that age. He was very responsible with it and had it for years. DD (as a toddler) is the one who broke it, so we replaced it.

DD had a vtech and then bought her own adult digital camera at 6.

DD's vtech is now DS2's camera.

Both of my kids are very good with having a real one (roughly $100), and have handled their cameras with care. Totally a YMMV.

I was in the camera store yesterday buying something for myself. I then asked for recommendations for camera for kids. He pointed out this one

It is only $110 is shockproof and waterproof. He said it was made for kids in mind. You certainly can't buy any other shockproof, waterproof for that price. Most run in the $300 range. He said the buttons were larger also.
