I have a several-year-old video camera (purchased shortly before DD1's arrival) that uses mini-DV tapes. They are not only expensive, but with all the upgrades to our computer hardware and software in between then and now, it's getting harder and harder to actually get the video off those tapes and onto anything watchable. (It seriously took two days of angst and finally resurrecting an old laptop to get DD1's last concert onto a DVD.)
So, what's the latest and greatest? What kind of media should I be looking to record to? The end result is that I would like to be able to easily watch whatever I've recorded on our TV, so eventually it has to migrate to a DVD.
My typical usage is for longer (15-30 minute) kid concerts or presentations, because it's rare that DH can get to them all and the kids want me to record them so he can watch later. Anything that's going to be just a couple of minutes I usually just use my phone.
