I am clueless here. I am hiring my DD's excellent preschool teacher to tutor my DS2, who is an upcoming 1st grader. He needs help with reading and phonics before next year begins. She is a newer full-time teacher; this last year was her first teaching. She did a phenomenal job with phonics and pre-reason with the preschoolers last year. Seriously, DD (3) is almost on par with DS (6). She will probably work with him three times a week, for an hour each time. How much would you pay per week/hour? She's leaving it up to me, and I have NO clue. We live in a medium COL area.

I think I paid ds' second grade teacher $20 an hour. We live in a HCOLA.

Academic tutors in my HCOL area make between $40 and $120 per hour. The higher rate is for High School Calculus and AP classes.

We're in an average COLA and teachers gets about $40/hour here. Maybe $100/week would be okay, since it's a standing deal for a few weeks?

$20 is too little. We live in an average COL and the rate was $40/hour.

She set her rate. Maybe I just got lucky?

I am absolutely shocked by $20 an hour. High quality academic tutoring is $100 an hour in this HCOLA. I'd be thrilled to pay $50 an hour for a well-qualified and effective tutor. I would be worried that if I paid too little, my tutor wouldn't do any preparation for the tutoring sessions and I believe that prep is an important part of the process.

My friend gets paid $35 per session and she tutors the same girl 2-3x a week. Most of my teacher friends ask for $30-$40 for the elementary/middle school set.

I tutored a lot of K-3 students when I started teaching - I am preK-6 and special Ed certified. I was paid $30 an hour in a lower cost of living area and i would say the range at that time in my area was $30-40. I did most of my tutoring about 8-10 years ago.

A friend of mine is a teacher who tutors after school and she charges $35 an hour. That's on the low end here for tutors but she has no travel time as the kids come to her.

Factors to consider:
How much prep work will she need to do before each mtg?
Are materials included or a separate fee?
How far is she traveling if tutoring is taking place at your home?
For instance 20 minutes on prep, driving 15 minutes each way, and providing some materials and paying for gas would turn a "30 an hour" tutoring job into less than $15 an hour earned after actual time and expenses are figured in.

I pay $90 an hour and I am told that is a good deal. In a HCOLA.
