UPDATE: Thanks to all of you for your P&PT. Unfortunately, Tony passed away on Saturday. A sudden, unexpected death is always a huge adjustment. In this case, he was the caregiver, cook, housekeeper, gardener, etc. for the past 12 years since their son was born. According to my friend, "he was a better stay-at-home mom than you or I will ever be!" His wife has not cooked anything for a long time - and he was apparently a fabulous cook because that's what all our kids keep talking about ("I'll never have Tony's spaghetti/fish-n-chips/pancakes/etc. again!"). They also live quite a distance from school and her workplace, so there will be a lot of new logistics for her to navigate. It sounds like she has already decided to move closer to school this summer, so that will help. I'm trying to figure out how to best help her, which is a little difficult since I didn't know either of them all that well (I didn't see her frequently, and he was really painfully shy so never said more than a "hello" at pickup/dropoff). But this is not about me, and I'll figure that out. Ugh, there's no good time to lose a parent, but for a 12-year-old boy to lose his dad (with whom he'd had an especially close bond) seems like particularly bad timing. Right on the cusp of puberty. Middle school years are full of so many changes and challenges already.
Just found out my son's friend's father is critically ill and most likely will not survive the day. I don't know all the details, but he had been feeling unwell for a while (fatigue, abdominal pain) and did not seek medical attention. He apparently had liver & kidney problems a few years ago. They went on a trip to a town about 3-4 hours' drive away, and he got sicker. He is now in the ICU there, too unstable to transport. He is having massive internal bleeding and efforts to stop it have been unsuccessful so far.
So, if anyone can spare some good thoughts for Tony and his family today, please do.
