Anyone help with computer that won't start?

Looks like my laptop may have died. It will not start even when I opt for last mode used-it looks like it's starting (the Windows screen saver loads) but then it just continuously runs (fan is going) with a dark blue screen.

Any thoughts? It does start in safe mode but when I try to restore back to last mode used, it ends up in the same spot (fan and blank screen).

My husband says it sounds like it might be the video driver. He said if that's the case hook it up to an external monitor to see if you can see anything on that. He said you can also check the event viewer and see if there are any errors listed there that the computer is complaining about. (look up how to check event log for your operating system) He said some other drivers that go bad can cause these symptoms, but the most likely culprit is video.
