My mother gave me a GC to LL Bean so I thought I'd spend it on a tote for the beach. We have 3 or 4 people going and I'd like it to fit all the towels & bathing suits and maybe a few extras. Is the extra large really huge?

I am pretty sure I have the extra large bag with the long handles and it holds alot of stuff! I can take snacks, 4 towels, clothing changes, book, sunscreen and other misc items easily. I think they've changed them since I got mine bc mine is blue instead of the natural color but it has huge pockets inside which is nice too. The only issue I have and really I guess with all that in there it would be with any bag but it's kinda heavy!

I would also do the extra large. I called to place an order the other day and threw out my 15 percent off code but they were still able to apply it.

Oooh. Where did you get the code?

I saw it in the catalog last weekly so but hastily threw it out. Then when I decided to order, I called and told them I had a code but didn't have it on me. Based upon the phone number I was calling from they stated they were aware of it and applied it. It was 15 percent off. No harm in calling to see if there is a code attached to your number if you are planning on ordering.

I would recommend heading to one of their stores. They have a really nice pool bag in the stores but I can't find it online. I personally don't get the appeal of that canvas bag...but, based on the number of people that use it, I am in the minority. :) Seems like it'd get heavy and wet. It's their old Adventure Tote (doesn't look like the new one) http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/49542?page=adventure-tote&subrnd=0

Ah, here is an image (I have it in blue)

You'll definitely need the XL to carry all the things you listed. Personally, I like the adventure tote for the pool/beach. It's nylon so it will dry faster plus it won't show dirt like the off-white canvas tote bags. That being said, I do like the open tops of the tote bags.

ETA...I forgot about the hunter's tote. If you're not picky about color, consider it.. It's polyester so it'll dry faster & it's got an open top:

We live at the beach and use ours regularly. I would recommend 1) getting the long handles so it goes on your shoulders (otherwise the handles are in your hands or on your forearms, both of which are uncomfortable with lots of beach stuff in there), and 2) customize it to get a dark color, because the light colored canvas does get really dirty. We have bags in both colors and even though I've washed the light colored one several times it's still pretty dingy looking. I much prefer my black one, it doesn't show any dirt ;)

We need a beach bag too. I like the Adventure Tote II for its water resistance and will probably order that in extra large.

Thanks ladies. I'm thinking of heading to the outlet on Friday. See what they have available.

too heavy for the beach for sure - check out Scout Bags (you'll find them if you google). they are as lightweight as a reusable shopping bag. also, llbean bags are impossible to clean --- Scout Bags you can wipe clean.

i have lots of the LL bean bags (thanks MIL) and i agree that the XL is the size you would need. get the long handles. but it will be heavy. and get dirty easy. i'd go for the pool bag mentioned above or something nylon material wise and dark colored. Salt Water Canvas bags are great for the beach. http://www.saltwatercanvas.com/

i have the large size with long handles (a few of them) and love them for groceries or swim lessons or the farmers market. they hold a LOT of weight and about 2 paper grocery sacks worth of volume. but not quite big enough for everything we would need for the beach.
