Can anyone recommend a Bible for my 10 year old DS? He is going to a Christian camp this summer and will need to bring his own bible. We attend a Methodist church, but the camp is Non-denominational.

Not an actual Bible but my DS loves the Action Bible. It is animated...bought at Sam's. It would be a nice accompaniment to the program but would probably will need another Bible. I bought DS a New English Bible at Ollies to reference the Action Bible...he really likes it. Might not be what you re looking for though. Have fun!!

He might want to help pick one out? If you have a Christian book store near by they probably have a few that would be appropriate. The only differences are going to be the translation and any "extras" that are in there, so probably whatever he chooses would be fine.

My kids have Adventure Bibles and like them. If you want to shop online, Christian Book Distributors (link (http://www.christianbook.com/?cp=1&utm_expid=918535-15)) has a big selection and good prices.

ETA: This (http://www.christianbook.com/adventure-bible-niv-closure-italian-1984/9780310939528/pd/939528?item_code=WW&netp_id=524330&event=EBRN&view=details) is similar to what my kids have; dd has pink and ds has green.

By 3rd grade (or is he a rising 4th grader?), he'll likely need a full-text bible without abbreviated stories or only pictures with summaries. In our church Sunday School, by 1st grade we're already teaching kids the order of the books of the Bible and start teaching them how to do "Sword drills" to look up passages to read for prizes. We always have to pass out Bibles b/c they all come with storybook/pictoral children's Bibles. They don't quite get the concept until 3rd grade, but they do it. Go to a Christian book store (Lifeway, Heaven & Earth or a Bible outlet) and let him take a few out of the box and see what he likes...is the print too small to read by drawing a finger across the line? Does a hardcover Bible keep closing vs a soft, leather-bound Bible that might stay open better so he doesn't loose his place. Does it have a built-in bookmarker (ribbon) or does he want his own? Does he want a separate bible cover? Does he want tabs/index on the side for quickly finding scripture passages? Some are too heavy, and I find the more add-ons/pictures/life-application notes, the more pages there are=the heavier it is.

My personal bible is NLT, and it's so easy to understand that I'll read it to my almost-3yo. I think NIV is my second favorite for easy-to-understand, and it's a safe bet that your camp would have a lot of readings from this (vs. New King James, esp since it's non-denominational) so he could follow along & not get lost. I just like NLT a little better.

The Adventure bible seems to get a lot of good reviews. I haven't seen a copy IRL though.

I really like the Adventure Bible. It is full text, and has interesting notes in it. I got the NLT translation for DD.

Our church gives out the Super Heroes Bible. It is a complete hardback Bible, but it has great pictures and many figures have their stories set out with their Biblical super powers (like trusting in God, showing courage, obeying God, etc). My kids love that the texts from the popular stories are so easy to find and presented in such a kid-friendly way.

He's almost 6, but this is a full Bible, not a story bible.

The Action Bible is awesome!!!! However, it's not a text Bible so I would look for an NIV (easy to read and most often used). Adventure Bible would be a good one.

MIL wanted to buy DD1 a Bible so she took her to the bookstore. She tried and tried to persuade DD1 to choose one with graphics and maps and devotionals and other features. DD1 wanted a plain NIV with a pink/purple sparkly cover. A battle of the wills ensued and DD1 won. :) We told MIL that we didn't care what sort of Bible she bought...as long as DD1 liked it and wanted to read it!

^ I like the idea of taking him to a bookstore and letting him pick out one that he likes.

DS has the Adventure Bible. It's very nice. I teach Sunday Scool and often use his bible to prepare because of all the helpful extra information about the verses. DS' has a blue leather cover.

In Sunday School (my class is 1st-6th graders) we use a NLT bible. I love the ease of the verses especially when reading aloud. The verses are slightly different from what I grew up with but are very easy for the children to understand. We have the Hands On bible in our classroom.

I agree with others that the Action Bible is wonderful. DS loves comics and manga and actually begged for it when he saw it at Barnes and noble. I do recommend it but suggest you get a regular bible as well.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Based on the suggestions, I took him in to pick and he chose the Live bible. It is more for teens, I think, but he's almost 11 and will be there soon! I do like that the index is alphabetical as he definitely has not memorized the order of the books. Hopefully, he likes this one, but if not, I'm not opposed to getting one of the other suggestions here. Thanks for the guidance!
