View Full Version : Velamentous Cord Insertion (VCI)? Anyone with any experience?

We just had our 20 week u/s. Another baby girl who looked great. :) Right on target, etc. When the high risk specialist came in, he said he wanted to look at one thing in particular and asked lots of questions regarding DD1's birth. Was it vaginal, full term, etc.? After looking around for a bit, he said I have velamentous cord insertion. I will be more closely examined for the rest of the pregnancy. I understand the key things are the continued growth of the baby and delivery. We asked lots of questions but he said for now, not to worry, and we just need to monitor. Does anyone have any experience? Of course Dr. Google has not provided me with all the information I would like. TIA

No experience other than to say I was just diagnosed with the same thing last week at my 20 week ultrasound. I have another one scheduled for 30 weeks to check the status of the baby's growth. I was told that there is a increased risk for intrauterine growth retardation in the 3rd trimester, but the data is controversial. So we are going to keep a close eye on growth and fluid levels in the 3rd trimester. I agree there isn't much on google.

The perinatal specialist said the same thing to me about growth, though not fluid levels but that makes sense, so he wanted me to come back every 4-6 weeks. Based on calendar availability, I am going back in about 5 weeks. I know it is very rare, I just wish there was more info especially about delivery options.

it's found sometimes just incidentally after delivery, so sometimes it's not a big deal at all. ('oh, look, a velamentous insertion. neat.') yours was found & will be watched, but try not to let that get your anxiety up.

as long as the part with the cord isn't over your cervix, it shouldn't change delivery options at all. they'll have to be more careful delivering your placenta, not to tug like they might be used to, but hopefully it won't be an event in any way. :)
