I suddenly started getting pain in my breasts 10 days ago. I thought it was from a workout but I've been working out for 2 months now and I haven't felt anything like this before. At first, the pain was more like an engorgement and radiated from the outer breasts to the arm pits. It was just a dull or sore kind of pain. It feels worse when I take off my bra. It was not constant. But today, the pain has shifted to the inner part of my breast and is constantly hurting. There is no swelling or lumps that I can see or feel. I also felt the breast bone and it doesn't hurt. FWIW, I was leaking milk at night a few days ago. I stopped nursing last Oct. I realize that one can have milk for quite some time so I wasn't worried. But the pain is causing me to rethink. My OB-Gyn is very popular around here and will only see me if I absolutely think it's necessary. So wanted to ask here if anyone had this kind of pain and if I should make an appt.

Could you be pregnant? Breast pain was always one of my first signs. I have started having this exact pain about 10 days before my period. It has gone on for several months now. I am chalking it up to getting older (I'm 43) and changes with my hormones.

Nope, not pregnant. Could be the hormones as I have Hashimoto's but why this so suddenly?

Since you just stopped nursing (well, within a year) it could be related to that. If I were you, I would call and ask if I need to go in. Let them decide.

I had something similar happen and was freaked out because there is BC in my family history. It turned out it was the underwire in my bra which was odd because my bra was not tight at all! I did go to my OB to make sure though.

Could you be wearing the wrong bra? I had this issue once and turns out my bras were not supporting me.

I have an appointment on Fri. I just got fitted in April for new bras after being in nursing bras but I suspect my bras are now loose or my breasts have changed yet again. The pain has now moved to behind my nipples and is constant. I was thinking BC too but I don't want to panic and get ahead of myself. I will report back just in case someone else has a similar issue.

I had intermittent breast pain that gradually increased until it was almost constant. This was over the course of a couple of months. I mentioned it to my obgyn at a check-up and based upon a few other factors, my dr recommended I get a sonogram and mammogram right away. Everything came back fine and oddly enough, after getting the mammogram the pain gradually subsided. Although now I have significant breast pain a few days before my period, and I never had that before. I was also supposed to follow up with a breast specialist but once everything came back ok, I never got around to it.

Lots of possibilities, almost all benign. Sounds like possibly a cyst, could be a low grade infection, could be usual prenenstrual breast pain. Call a breast specialist, preferably one with a nurse practitioner that specializes in benign breast disease

According to my OB/GYN, it's my brain telling my breasts to produce milk. In other words, prolactin is still urging my body to produce milk even though I am not leaking or anything. She gave me a progesterone cream and told me to apply that on my breasts. She also said that this was a fairly common problem for women after nursing. Well, I haven't nursed since last Oct. and she said it was still very normal and common. HTH someone else.

ok am just bumping this bc i think i am dealing with something similar.
two days ago i was getting almost like a shooting pain in my right breast, on and off, all day. it was really bugging me. freaked me out bc i have a family history of breast cancer (my mom had breast cancer surgery/radiation last year).

then in the shower i noticed i was leaking milk! For pete's sake, i stopped nursing DD 15 months ago!! But then, i realized that several of my friends (like 3-4) have just had babies in the past couple weeks, and my FB feed is flooded with newborn pictures and new moms gushing how they are over the moon with their babies, etc. And it really got me thinking how I wanted to have another baby just so i could have the "right" experience vs. having baby in NICU for a month, being on our own without help, dealing with a fussy preemie, that kind of thing. Never thought all that could trigger lactation over a year after the fact though!! I know that when i was nursing DD and she was in the NICU if i saw pictures of her it would make me leak milk.

Only prob is i still have the pain now but it's more in the upper part of the boob, and it feels almost exactly like a plugged duct. :( WTF! Like I said last time i nursed was 15 mos ago.
