DS1 is turning 8 very soon. He says he wants to pick out room decorations and posters for his walls. He wants NOTHING else. So I plan to take him shopping on his bday to pick some stuff out.

Any ideas for where to take him (B&M stores)?

Any ideas for something to wrap up and give him??

Thanks!

It could be fun to bundle it as an experience. Gift card for his favorite restaurant (pizza, whatever), homemade certificate for shopping, certificate for an after shopping movie, ice cream, whatever.

Do you have an Ikea near you? My DC picked out their new rooms bedding and decorations there. Hobby Lobby also has lots of great decorations for kids.

I like the PP's suggestion of a gift card to make a whole day of it.

A few ideas.

Sports: DS1 got various sport posters for his birthday. For Christmas, he got a couple of those huge life like stick on basketball players for his wall.

Maps: The world maps from Costco posted by Wellyes in the bargains board is another idea to wrap up.

Art/Modern Art: Could you take him to an art museum store? Ds1 loves posters from there.

His own pictures. Goto the zoo or art museum and let him play photographer.

I think your DS likes legos. What about making a frame to store minifigures as these links show and then some legos with minifigures to put in the frame?

Of course, this sort of frame might not go with the other new pictures he picks out for his room. Some other ideas would be some new games or really cool pop up books.

For games, I just saw these games in a magazine and thought they looked fun.

For pop up books, there are so many really cool ones. Sabuda's dinosaur or shark books or Reinhart's Star Wars books are great. Really, any books by Sabuda or Reinhart are great.

Does Ikea have good kids posters in store (framed)?

Not that I've ever seen, at least not for older kids, but they do have wall stickers that he might like: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90228174/ and these frames: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10186050/ are fun and cheap if you can find posters somewhere else.

I would venture out to Hobby Lobby or Michaels. They always seem to have TONS of stuff including posters (though not framed). Maybe plan a couple of stops and lunch?

My son is younger, but we have 2 photo collage frames on his walls. For one of them, he and DH stripped to their skivvies (he was only 2 at the time) and painted the frame together. I love that frame - the hand prints, etc. It is SO much fun.

The other we were given. We put pictures of Stachio in each frame and he loves them. Especially the ones from when he was a baby. He asks questions, etc. Maybe do 1 frame like this? You could combine this with photos he's taken, instead of just photos of him....
