Hi! I'm a Mom of DSs and we have to get a birthday gift for a 5 yo girl. We only know trains, cars, and construction vehicles (which some girls like, yes, but not this one). Where can we find a good deal on a great gift? THANKS!

What is your price range? I would also ask the mom for suggestions on what she likes. I wpuld guess princesses and dress up stuff.

DD is 5.5- here's what she likes:
Crafty stuff, puzzles (Monster High was a recent purchase), Barbies, My Little Pony, books of all kinds (especially princesses and fairies). You could do some type of a craft kit- like a Melissa and Doug or Creatology one from Michael's, coupled with a couple of books?

My daughter is 6.5 and is into "girly" stuff like dolls, princesses, dressing up, etc. But not all girls like dolls. Some don't like them at all! Most girls like crafts though. My daughter has a Shrinky Dink oven and has lots of fun with it. You can make them in a regular oven as well. We saw that drawing tablet that zag95 mentioned in her post. We were at the toy store buying gifts for a birthday party but my daughter took an interest in that tablet. She like the Lego Friends sets too.

I think ours were purchased at Barnes & Noble with a coupon :)

Same here...fairies and dress up clothes. They have some cute dress up dresses for about $20 at toys r us and you can pair it with shoes etc for pretty cheap

Disney store also has these cute deluxe sleep gowns that made to look like dress up clothes but made for sleepwear so comfy. Honestly doesn't look like pj to me. I just got Snow White and belle

My 5yo DD loves Shrinky Dinks. She got a really nice Shrinky Dink jewelry craft kit for her birthday that has been a big hit.

Can you call one of the parents and find out what she likes? Most of my nieces like princess stuff, but I have one who doesn't. She likes Hello Kitty!
When in doubt, I go to the art supply store and get colored pencils, construction paper, cray-pas crayons and unique coloring books. But you might find similar stuff online or at a big name store.

I just saw an article about Goldie Blox and it looks really cool. It is an engineering toy and book aimed at girls aged 5 and up. I know nothing about it except what was in the article, but it looks cool.

I am also intrigued by the Goldie Blox stuff.

But hands down my best purchase this year for my 4.5 year old has been an automatic bubble maker ($10) and lots of bubble fluid....! Gets them running around the back yard for hours!

Otherwise craft stuff for sure....but no glitter, ugh. Like my friend says, it is the crafting version of herpes - you can never get rid of it...
