Most of my bulk/Indian spices are in plastic Tupperware spice set that came with a carousel, think pie shaped containers. Of course now it's discontinued and I have lots of spices in ziplocks, random containers and original containers. I need to transfer some of my spices to airtight containers in order to a)keep them fresh and b) keep the scent from wafting out every time I open the cabinet door! Many of the bottles on amazon aren't really airtight, based on reviews. I had pretty much figured I'd get the 4oz mason jars from walmart (about $10 for a dozen) until of course I checked pinterest/gardenweb and came across the weck jars. I would probably get the mini mold jars, size 080 and size 170.

At W-S they are about $3 each for a dozen of the 170 style.

Considering pros/cons, then I had to figure in replacements on the wecks, much harder as availability is limited and some sizes are online only (for me). And that other people use my kitchen and spices and user error and older arthritic fingers and lost clamps, and misalignment on the weck. Leading me back to Mason. And here's another vote for mason jars.

I have my bottled spices arranged on the Linus clear spice racks, and they make me happy:http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/spiceStorage?productId=10029594&N=70879&mr=spice

Do you have an awesome spice storage system that's airtight?

Not sure how expensive they are but penzeys sells empty spice bottles in several sizes, same ones they ship in.

I like these jars (one piece lids):

I have all sizes, larger for things like cocoa, even larger for beans, etc.

If you go with the mason jars, I'd switch out the two piece mason jar lids for one piece lids.

at least one reviewer says they have a gasket and are airtight. I think they may be the ones...

I had looked at the Penzey's ones and they didn't look airtight. Nor did the empty bottles at The Fresh Market.

How airtight are you talking about? The penzeys bottles certainly are tight enough that I don't smell anything when I open my cabinet and I have many fragment spices and mixtures. They're equivalent to what spices sold in grocery store are packaged In. If you love the Tupperware ones, either use the small snack containers or look for vintage of the same ones you have on ebay.

If you're still considering mason jars, I would suggest a lid like this.

My sister is a chef and lives where there are bugs and what not in the kitchen so she has this combination for her spices and bakery ingredients.

I actually think you cannot really keep them fresh for longer than 6 months. So, I don't bother with the limited spices I use.

Yes, sorry, those. They're canning jars, so there's a little waxy ring, but unless you actually canned something in them, they won't truly be airtight. You'd need a FoodSaver type vacuum system. The spices stay reasonably fresh in these jars. I know you're supposed to purge every 6 mos, but mine are still pungent after over a year.

Finally tried some of the bottles IRL. I don't know what I was thinking. None of the real canning things will work for me. Weck etc the rubber thing is flapping around. Mason jar with 2 piece lids would drive me crazy.

This is what I had some spices in and would work best for me, although I'd prefer a 1 cup size as well. Snapware 0.5 cup containers which I had from a Costco multipack.

What I do like about the container store bottle and also glass bottles (that I can reuse, time to start saving) is that substance on the inner ring of the lid, kind of squishy...seems to give the bottle a better seal when I close it. May be my imagination.
