View Full Version : Tie sneakers for a child who can't tie yet?

We are having a really hard time finding sneakers that are comfortable for my DD (almost 5, wears size 11). She complains that sneakers feel too tight across the top of her foot (where the laces/Velcro is). She doesn't measure wide at all and the salesman at Stride Rite tells me that wide won't help bc it is only wider in the toe box which is not her issue.

We put her in a pair of Nike tie sneakers at a sporting good store, which seemed to be more comfy for her bc we could adjust the tightness across her foot with the laces. But she was really worried about the laces as she heads to K (half day) bc she can't tie yet. We have worked on it a little, but she isn't really close to getting it yet.

Anyone done tie shoes before their child could tie? Was it a disaster?

I haven't bought tie shoes for my DD yet, but sure I'll need to soon, as my DD is also almost 5, but a size 13 or 1 (!), and it's hard to find velcro shoes that size. They used to make little curly 'laces' (look like a big spiral ring) that you could put in tie shoes, and just slip the shoes on and off... I wonder if Amazon would have something like that?

I did not do that with DS, but there is locklaces: http://www.locklaces.com/ as a possible solution. You can also get it from Amazon.

Sounds like you need higher volume shoes than are sold at SR.

We have the needs-a-width problem in our house, so I'm not sure which kids' brands are higher volume.

I think the priority is getting shoes that fit your child's foot, but I might ask the kindy teachers how available they might be to assist in tying untied shoelaces before I decided on a non-Velcro option.

DD1 has worn New Balance Kids shoes since she was 2. She has worn shoes similar to these for the last two years:

DD1 has a high instep as well so she can't wear traditional two strap Velcro shoes either.

I just bought her these Nikes as well and they fit her well (although I think they run a bit small):

My DS couldn't tie laces well either. We just tied them and double knotted them in the morning. Usually he was fine. Occasionally he would need to re-tie and often his teachers (or the aids on yard supervision) would be willing to help him out. We have found that New Balance tend to be good for our kiddo with wider feet (he often complains when trying on new shoes that he can't wiggle his toes enough, so he has a higher instep as well).

Something like these might work for her
