Ok, so it's time to start packing school lunches, and DS, 4th grade has a ll bean rectangle classic lunch box- this one:http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70705?feat=lunch%20box-SR0&page=lunch-box

he is really into taking salads for lunch, and we use funtainers for water, which i leave in the lunch box, as it doesn't really work for us to keep it in the pocket, if it would even really fit.... so- our criteria are:

must fit in the lunch box with the thermos too, must be BPA free, must have a secure lid, and no glass- i would love to do mason jar salads but the risk for him with glass is too high!!

I have tried the divided gladware containers and love them, but the water bottle doesn't fit- i wish they'd make a shorter one that is still divided and allows the water bottle to fit, too!! is that too much to ask ???:D

There are plastic Mason/Ball jars, marketed as freezer jars.

We use the same LL Bean lunchboxes (for two 4th grade boys and one middle schooler). Those funtainers take up so much room; would you consider switching to something smaller for drinks? We use the 12-oz Klean Kanteen bottles, which fit well along the short side of the lunchbox. For salads and sandwiches, we have the rectangular LunchBots containers. I can still fit other items in as well. The small KKs are just for water with lunch; the kids have another bottle in their backpacks/desks/locker to use during the day.

would you consider pryex? Glass but not easily broken. I've send DS1 to school with pyrex no problem. YMMV of course just thought I'd toss that out.

I don't know if you would consider another lunch box, but we have the LL Bean Critter lunch boxes and for the last few years I used them with the Ziploc divided containers and then put the Funtainer on top of the container. It fit perfectly. I still have a picture I took for someone. When I zipped it up and stood the lunchbox on end, the Funtainer would be upright. There was also room for other snacks or an apple as well. I think that LL Bean calls these the Discovery Lunch box now. ETA: I know this is a pic with a Camelbak bottle but I did it with a Funtainer after this bottle got lost.
