an old college friend ( the dad) . We haven't seen him since the wedding( a few years ago) & they live a thousand miles away. I don't know anything about the mom. It is their first child, a boy, & he is about 2 months old already.

HELP! I am at a loss.

Does the dad had a favorite sports team, maybe his alma mater? A jersey onesie or something similar might be nice since they probably already have the basics.

Thanks for your response. I have seen via fb that he already has several of our alma mater jerseys/outfits. I'm at a loss. I didn't want to go the gift card route but I might have to.

Could you get a few things for the 12+ age? People don't always gift for that age. I love the stuff like the Bjorn catch bibs, boon anti-slip saucer plate, and the bigger handle spoons/fork, etc. Or the tiny diner mat?

Books? How about a great book and Hanna Andersson pjs? A fun winter hat from Etsy? I also like to give shoes for a new walker--maybe a pair of Pedipeds?

My favorite generic baby gift is a California Cozy blanket. DH and I sleep with their pillowcases, DS has a blanket, I have given them again and again and they are always loved.

I know this is a little expensive for whimsy, but this cardigan onesie (or similar) http://www.lottiedababy.com/shop/baby-boy-gifts/red-grey-cardigan-bow-tie-set/

How about a baby blanket with his name monogrammed on it? Lands End has some cute ones that I've ordered for friends. Definitely under your $40 range, and feels special.

I would send a pair of Robeez. These ones are precious! http://www.myrobeez.com/robeez-boy-dachshund-soft-soles/ in size 6-12 mo. or 12 mo. :)

I think I am going to send a pair of robeez & maybe a bib or two. A close second was a monogrammed blanket but I am concerned since he is a first that he will have a bunch.

Thanks for all the replies!!

I love Pottery Barn Kids personalized books! They have been a huge hit for me.
