I wanted to share something that has helped us greatly. A friend of mine has much older kids, and she told me that she regretted hand-holding and doing stuff for her oldest because he never learned to manage on his own.

The second time around, she let her dd handle things on her own from a very early age. I have done the same for both my kids and I think that letting them pack their bags, figure out hw (within reason - not in kg), and so on have helped them develop good habits.

Also, it's best to do it in the early grades, before school gets too serious and overwhelming. Let them fail when it doesn't matter, and they will (hopefully) learn from their mistakes. I realize some kids require a lot more guidance if they have ADD or some other issues. Mine are anxious, so I tread carefully and I have bailed them out on the rare occasion that they screw up, but it's very rare.

Just my two cents.
