Yes. The facebook updates were...chilling. I'm feeling so heartsick for them. On the other hand seeing all the people praying and all the scriptures shared was very uplifting. May the Lord give this family some peace and rest as they work through this hard time.

How terrible for that family. We had a drowning in our community on the 4th of July, at the community swmming hole. A three-year-old boy lost his life.

P & PT for your community and that family.

So sorry for your loss.

Over the weekend we were at my BIL's house and he has a pool, a 3 yr. old, and a baby (4 months) and he doesn't have a fence or a pool cover. He doesn't see the need because he says his DS knows not to go in the pool when the parents aren't there and he has locks on the top of his slider doors, but I just think it is still awfuly stupid because the boy who hasn't had swim lessons (as he is always in the pool with one of his parents) either could walk outside on his own and potentially drown. My BIL is a pretty smart guy overall, but still it would make me nervous not having it fenced or covered if I lived there. He also said that pool fences make the pool area look lame. :shake:

Well, unfortunately it will only take once to prove him wrong. Three year olds are SO impulsive. Wandering out once, wanting to try it by themselves, reaching in to get a toy, slipping on the edge... Ridiculously naive.

But I know you know that. ;)

I agree and even if I didn't have kids if I were a pool owner I would feel the need to fence on the off chance that a neighbor child wandered through. I hope he re-considers.

That can't possibly be legal, don't pools have to be enclosed?

carolinacool

Does is vary by jurisdiction? Where I live, pools aren't very common at all. But we do have friends whose parents live out in the country. They have a medium-size in-ground pool, and as I'm thinking about it, there is not fence around the pool. The backyard itself has a fence, but the pool itself is just a five or six feet from the back deck.

I am not entirely sure, but I would think this would be a state law not a blanket federal one. His house was built in 2005 and they put the pool in 2007/2008 IIRC. He did mention something about he had the option to put a lock on the top of his sliding door, which is about 9 to 10 ft. off the ground, so he does meet regulation #5 which is mentioned in the link below, but if it were me I would want a cover.

California pool law for pools built in 2007 or later:
