DS is dead set on being an octopus - part of his ongoing obsession with all things octo

i can either buy this
1. http://www.chasing-fireflies.com/giant-octopus-costume/productinfo/34991/

2. or this http://www.lunabellboutique.com/kids-safari-full-body-octopus-costume-toddler-and-kids-sizesbaby-and-kids-halloween-costumes.html

3. or make this http://www.instructables.com/id/No-Sew-Octopus-Costume/

they all seem not great to me. i think the store-made ones are freaky looking and the homemade one seems maybe babyish?

what do you think?

thx

Definitely #3. The first one is just weird looking, the second doesn't look like an octopus. I think you can make the third one look less babyish by using non-striped socks, and less goofy eyes. Maybe a dark green sweatshirt instead if bright blue.

How about this one? Looks a little more grown up and easy to make. You could use a really big hoody and have it be long. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm1.static.flickr.com/103/276422204_c69f4c428c.jpg%3Fv%3D0&imgrefurl=http://everythingoctopus.blogspot.com/2008/10/octopus-costumes-for-halloween-children.html&h=500&w=333&sz=119&tbnid=H4RT1WJ6nE6zZM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=60&zoom=1&usg=__nraurhbFpjQk7KFjR48vgSvlZoI=&docid=m-2EbI-V0OpB_M&sa=X&ei=CFg4UtuxGM_H4APrtYHwCA&ved=0CFoQ9QEwAg&dur=349

Oh, and by the way, now having done the Google search I have to get the images of "sexy octopus costume" out of my head.

I couldn't get the 3 to load, but check ebay for the other two, part of my issue with them is the price, but also the models aren't exactly selling those costumes.

I think ocotpus are weird looking to begin with so until you see it in person it's hard to picture.

How about this

I found this: http://www.marthastewart.com/266665/octopus-costume

But it requires a sewing machine. Personally - I couldn't do it; maybe you're more crafty than me. Otherwise I'd go with option 3.

3 is the cutest; the store-bought ones are just plain ugly.

Your DS is 4.5, right? It's still fine to have a "babyish" costume at 4.5, IMO.

I didn't start wearing "scary" costumes until I was 8.

I voted for #3. Partly because there is no way I would spend $80+ on a Halloween costume, but also because I think #3 is cutest and looks pretty easy to make (and I am not crafty).

Can you have your son help you make #3? Then he can tell everyone he made his own costume! He'll be proud. he gets to go as what he wants and it looks like it won't cost a horrible lot.

If I saw that costume with no one in it, I'd beat it with a shovel! It's really icky to me. :) But like you said, octopi are kind of weird to begin with.

LOL!!

yeah, i'm not a fan of octopi either

though he's obsessed and we've learned quite a bit about them b/c of it - they are fascinating animals!

though ugly for sure

thanks for input

i'm going to direct him toward making one

some day i will have the opportunity to buy something easy and cute. right?

maybe.

hopefully.

at least DD is at an age where i can pick and purchase for her.

I agree that #3 is the best option, and I agree that it can look less babyish based on the color and style of the socks you use. I did something similar this YEARS ago in all black because I was going as a spider and it didn't look babyish - so color/style can really make the costume. FYI, Target usually has some fun, inexpensive knee socks and I love the idea of having him help with the costume.

How about this one from Family Fun magazine? http://spoonful.com/crafts/octopus-costume I think it's pretty much the same as the one dogmom posted.
No sewing required.

What about making him a scuba diver costume and have him hold a rubber or plush octopus? I saw a cute kid last year with a DIY scuba costume and a sibling was a jelly fish.

I actually like the Chasing Fireflies one. I feel like it will look cool in person even if the pic is a bit odd. But I'm not crafty at all so making costumes is the most scary thing of all to me. I'd buy it and see if I could sell it next year - I agree that $88 for a costume is crazy expensive.

Does he like the show "Octonauts"? Maybe he would like to be a character from that show.

This one is 10,000 times better than 1-3.
