I have no clue what is acceptable these days... I am going to a black tie gala with dh in a couple of weeks. I found a long black dress (plain, but flattering) and haven't figured out shoes yet.

My hair is long-ish (around shoulder blades), fairly thick, and slightly wavy. I blow it out straight on a normal day.

I will need to do my own hair for this (not spending the money or the time on getting it done). There is no way I can figure out an updo.

So, what do people wear in their hair? I will either straighten it or try curling it (I just bought some hot rollers to experiment with). I will need to pull some of it back. Is a barrette okay? In the back middle or on a side? I just don't want to look like I am going to prom circa 1992, since that is the last time I did anything with my hair!

Several of my more put together friends seem to be going to getting their hair styled at dry bars. Not just for special occasions but for everyday. They are making the blowout last 4+ days. I have never gone but plan on trying it soon for a special occasion. Everyone "oohs and aahs" over their hair when they go.

Since you want to do your hair yourself, here is a dry bar menu so you can see what people are ordering:

Hope that helps!

I would highly recommend that you check out the tutorials on this blog:

http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com/p/hair_17.html

Someone here recommended it originally and it has a TON of do-it-yourself, up-to-date styles that look very doable.

Have fun!

For fancy occasions, I blow dry my hair straight and use a straightening iron to get a sleek look. I would not do a barret.

Thanks for the link - that looks great!

I have to use something to hold my hair back. Have to. It can be a barrette, comb, some other clip I don't know the name of, but I have to have something.

Time to go explore the link :)

Ditto on this ^! I have done several of her tutorials! I have to say though that adding texture is imperative for some of them to really look right. I bought a small blue bottle called Fx (I think) of Sea Salt Spray from Walmart and it worked like a charm!
