I'd like to get DS Snap Circuits for his 5th birthday. Which version is a good one for a five year old to start off with? It seems like they have a lot of options (100 pieces, 300 pieces, mini kits, etc).

Not sure if it makes a difference, but he's very advanced at puzzles (I know this isn't a puzzle, but the skills seem similar enough). He can do 100-pieces puzzles alone and 200 pieces with some help from me.

Thanks!

I'd get the junior set since you have younger kids to pass down toys to and if he's too advanced for it, you can always buy a normal snap circuits set for Christmas.

I'd also recommend the Jr. DD started using that one when she was 5 and loves it!

The only difference between the jr. and regular version is that the jr. has 100 projects and the regular has 300 projects. (So the 100 and 300 is number of projects, not pieces.) The 300 set actually contains all the projects from the 100 set. Once you have a base set, you'd just buy upgrades to get more projects.

We have the 300 set that was given to DS1 as a gift. DS2 loves playing with it, but I'm now looking for an upgrade kit to either the 500 or 700 level.

We bought DS1 the Jr kit at 6 nearly 7 years old. It was a real hit and he was able to do many of the projects by himself once we worked a few together. He also started working on his own creations which was great, My plan was to start with the Jr to see if he liked it and to help him build confidence and then jump ahead to 500 or 700.

thanks for this!

right now amazon has the JR-100 for $20.18, the SC-300 for 39.93 and the upgrade kit from 100 to 300 is 23.47. so overall, its a little cheaper to just go ahead and buy the SC-300 vs buying the JR and later the upgrade kit.

I just ordered the 300 for DS's bday! Just what he needed, another gift! At least this is educational!
