Still looking for cheap windbreaker/rain jacket and saw cute rain ponchos at target.com. Are these useful? I really like how they fold up in the pocket, but am I still going to feel like we need actual rainjackets?

I think that this will largely depend on your area so I'll answer for mine:

I'm in an area where it's more likely to be a COLD rain, so a poncho wouldn't be enough for an everyday raincoat - but it would be fine to keep in my child's backpack or car.

For serious rain, I prefer a fabric-lined raincoat or a GoreTex windbreaker layered over a sweatshirt.

I find ponchos more useful for pulling out in a quick downpour but not so great for real rainwear. I prefer jackets (and pants) for rainy, outdoor play.

Ours are cheapie ones that i leave in the car. I have grabbed them and threw them in a purse or stroller for places like amusement parks, sporting events, concerts, at the beach. mostly when we could be stuck outside for hours and there's a chance of rain. Probably only used them twice, but they are small and lightweight. i wouldn't spend alot but nice to have. I hate lugging raincoats or umbrellas JUST IN CASE.
