Birthday Gift for Four Year Old Boy

We would like to spend under $30 for a birthday gift for our friends' 4 y.o. son. The family leans away from characters and commercialized toys, but seems to have every Melissa & Doug product on the market.

Last year we got him a Green Toys Recycling Truck (thanks BBB!) and that was a big hit (and yes, I got one for The Biscuit for Hanukah this year), but these are uncharted waters for me because the Biscuit is only 2.

I figure that this will give us a preview of coming attractions!

DS just got the Busytown game (http://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Forge-01017-Richard-Scarry/dp/B002V3RCE6/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1381511984&sr=1-1&keywords=busytown) for his 5th b.day and both he and DD (2.5) absolutely love it. He doesn't watch much Busytown on TV, and it is based on Richard Scarry's books, so maybe it'll pass muster for this family?

I was going to say Stomp Rockets, too. DS1 got them at 4 and they're still played with now, over 5 years later!
