View Full Version : did you have an early ultrasound?

With my first pregnancy, I wasn't quite sure of my dates and therefore got an ultrasound around 7 weeks. Saw the HB, felt reassured.

With this one, now 9 weeks, I did not make the same mistake and was rock solid sure of my LMP. So I haven't had an ultrasound yet.

At my first appointment (5 weeks), the doctor said they would try to check for the HB with doppler at the next appointment, which was today. Well, this different doctor didn't do any exam at all except for pee and BP, and asked the same questions as they asked last time, which was a waste of time IMO.

I scheduled myself for the NT scan, but that is 3 weeks off. I really wish I had some confirmation besides puking every day that this baby is growing and in the right place and all, so I can tell people at work and extended family and get on with it all.

Did you have an early ultrasound? If not, did you wait to tell people til after the NT scan?

I had an early ultrasound, but still waited until after the NT to tell anyone outside of close family. The early US was more for my peace of mind than for anyone else. I knew my dates very accurately this time, but wanted to see the HB so my doctor obliged.

Both of my recent OBs do U/S routinely at the first OB appt to confirm a single intrauterine pregnancy and dates. I think that is the standard practice for the majority of OBs in my area.

I had one at ~7 weeks because although I knew the date of my LMP, my cycles had been long and a little variable after coming off the pill ~6 months earlier. I don't know if I would have been offered one if I hadn't mentioned that I thought I ovulated a week later than would normally be calculated by LMP.

I did with DD, around 5 weeks, because I had some bleeding. With this pregnancy, I had one around 8 or 10 weeks.

It may have been dating for THEM, but not for me, because I know when the baby was conceived within 1 or 2 days.

Yes, with #1; no with #2. I didn't tell people till 12 weeks with either. Elected not to have NT scan.

I have had an early u/s with all of mine. we didn't tell with this one until we'd had 2 u/s's WITH heartbeats...I think I'd had 3 u/s's by then total. I knew my dates for sure with 3 of my 4 pregnancies, but this one I was not as sure.

8 years ago when I was pregnant with DD, no. Only us was at 20 weeks, which was routine back then.

With both DS, I had a us at my first appointment at 9ish weeks. I didn't tell people until after NT scan.

With DD, I had the first scan at 5ish weeks to check for the pregnancy placement then almost 7 weeks for heartbeat. This new pregnancy, new doctor and their policy is scans no earlier than 8 weeks unless something goes on like bleeding etc. I told my close family and few closest friends very early though, other people that I see fairly often after NT scan (like at preschool pick up ;)). Most people don't know yet. Fb will probably wait till Halloween :), I m making a baby skeleton shirt.

I have never had an early ultrasound but have heard the heartbeat on Doppler at about 12 weeks each time.

Yes with all 3 pregnancies.

I do, but my LMP is not a reliable indicator for gestation. Sometimes it is 2 or 3 weeks off. Also, I had bleeding with my last two pregnancies, so we do a lot of extra looking that most people shouldn't need.

They're standard with my OB. i got one around 5-6 with both kids. We waited until about 12 weeks to tell most people.

Yes this. Standard practice at the excellent OB practice I went to, even 10 years ago with my first. Out here in our city, it seems like the standard practice no matter the age of the mom. It was part of the initial visit.

ETA. We don't tell anyone until after 12 weeks, and with number three told my in laws even later. We just like to wait and not be hounded until it is out of the statistically more risky zone.

DS1-- Yes, but I regret it because it was not medically necessary and I'm not a fan of u/s for non-medical reasons.

DS2-- No. I had one u/s at the 21 week mark only.

Yes with both.

My OB does one around 6-8 weeks to make sure that the heart beat is there & that the pregnancy is non-ectopic, as well as confirming dates.

Aw, now I feel extra bad that I didn't get one, since so many people did! I don't get the sense that it's standard here without some reason, and I don't have any particular reason that makes me higher risk.

I get how it's not medically necessary and probably a waste of healthcare $$, since even if there was a problem it's not like they could do anything about it anyway. But still, now I'm feeling extra bummed.

DD1, yes @ 7 weeks and DH was with me (it was the only appt. he went to)

Baby 2, yes @ 7 weeks, but it could barely be seen (turns out Tri-18 babies grown at a slower rate and no one told me that; had no idea until I met with a perinatoligist at 20 weeks)

DD2, yes @11-12 weeks and that was at the Nuchal Fold test which I was adamant about having as it hadn't been given as an option with baby 2 (no testing before 18 weeks and then a an echo at 20 weeks) so I had I not had the Nuchal option I probably would have begged for a CVS test. After the Nuchal test we didn't have another u/s until 18 weeks and that was the only one.

Yes, with #2. I was 100% about LMP but my midwife couldn't find the heartbeat with the Doppler at "12 weeks" so she scheduled me to come back for an U/S a week later. Turns out I was only 9 weeks at that point; having only 2 or 3 cycles per year must've been why my ovulation was off.

We had struggled to conceive again so we were terrified for that week of waiting, and while I am against unnecessary scans, this one was a huge relief.

6 and 7 weeks with DD and DD1. My office does them routinely to check for a uterine pregnancy, heartbeat, twins, dates, etc. Then one at 12 weeks and 20 weeks and after that only if needed. Last time I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and a check of amniotic fluid when I was overdue.

My office only does a 12 wk and a 20 wk routinely. However, I had one around 6 wks with DS because I had a lot of pain that they wondered if it might be ectopic. Then I did have an ectopic when DS was 9 months old, so this time around they scheduled me for an earlier u/s, maybe at 9 wks?

This was the case for me too. 1st pregnancy was after a miscarriage and had some bleeding, so several early u/s. Second pregnancy, the first one was sometime around 8-10 weeks, with Doppler used before to hear heartbeat.

yes, early and multiple us with both girls. Its was not considered 'standard' with any of my obs but I had bleeding and multiple m/c so they were necessary.

1st pregnancy yes at 9 weeks. It was an internal and ended in mc. I basically never stopped bleeding since the appointment.

2nd and 3rd opted out of any ultrasound until 12 weeks when the outside one can be done.

I has an ultrasound at 9 weeks with DS (now 9 years old), because the OB and I disagreed on the conception & due dates.

That ultrasound was when they found that DS had a cystic hygroma and we were immediately classified as a high risk pregnancy and I was sent to a high risk specialist.

I had one at 10 weeks with DS1 (not standard practice) because we couldn't hear a heartbeat. Don't recall with DS2 but don't think so. Had one as part of a study with my third pregnancy at 6 weeks, ultimately lost that baby at 7 weeks (I knew after ultrasound that it would not be a viable pregnancy). Had one at 6 weeks with DD (1 month post miscarriage) and another at 10 weeks for Nuchal Scan testing.
