DS is 5. Can you play the regular Spot it or does he need Spot it Jr? Do we need more than one variety? ( animals, regular, etc)

Absolutely they can play the regular. We were playing Spot It before there was a Jr. :) The Junior is probably helpful because there were some shapes in regular Spot It that younger DD didn't know (yin-yang, etc.) but she just came up with her own names.

Exactly. We bought the regular version when ds2 was 3yo and he could play.

Regular should be fine. And I think one type is enough.
